Help Me Help You make a difference to the lives of abandoned, disabled, deaf and disadvantaged Children in Quzhou. We believe children should have the right to ENJOY the life they were given and that means live in hygenic conditions, live with love, support and a chance of an education.
From left to right, Jinhui HMHY's physiotherapist, asst nurse, Mr Xu Chinese masseur, main nurse, Arvo, Elinor and Ms Chen Chinese masseur with Xuxu, FengFeng, BinBin,MingXian,Paul,Thomas, YuanLi and Julia.
All photos below show the conditions BEFORE HMHY and the conditions AFTER HMHY. HMHY supporters and volunteers know their donations have reached the children and are being used at the orphanage because HMHY volunteer there 6-7x a week during term time and 3-4x a week during holidays.
HMHY have given selflessly of their free time to help train the nurse and other volunteers on how to properly give a bath, change a nappy and feed a baby from a newborn to an older bed bound toddler. These bed bound toddlers now have visits from physiotherapists helping them to sit up by themselves and walk.
HMHY have renovated the orphanage in such a way that the nurses find it easier to store things and the baby changing mat is brilliant!

The nurse's room
The Children's room (now called Babies' room)
The children's room was dirty and dismal, so HMHY got rid of the mattresses and dirty blankets replacing them with new mattresses.
But as you can see (below), with new duvets, blankets and mattresses, the room still looked very dismal.
So HMHY completely renovated the Babies' room installing bamboo floors, new cots, new curtains and painted the walls in non toxic paint. Donating even more clothes and necessities for the children.
Elinor's sunset on the wall with a sky of birds really stands out for the children.
The Kitchen (you need to see this renovation close up!)
The Kitchen Walls

Now tiles on the wall to stop dampness and orange and green paint to bring warmth to the room that gets the most sun.
The outside terrace used for hanging clothes (below). The children had nowhere to play because the orphanage was on the 4th floor and the floors in the orphanage were concrete. They often stayed in bed or if volunteers were present played on the concrete floor with them.
NOW the children can play outside safely with volunteers and because the terrace is just off from the kitchen the nurse can keep a close eye on them when they play alone.
Playroom (there are two rooms)
Before: After:
Changing Mat : Before the nurses' always used the bed (with nappies they used the packet, without nappies they used the sheets), after they used the changing mat donated by Elinor, Ben and Sissi on their visit to Luxembourg in January 2007.
The Mattresses: Before and After (in every bed)
Where bottles were cleaned before:
Where bottles are cleaned now (new kitchen&sink and steriliser)
Before: Rags and donated clothes from elsewhere were never used when HMHY arrived in 2005. The clothes were stored in the cardboard boxes they arrived in. The clothes were dusty and left to mildew.
Below: All the mattresses that had been in the beds up until HMHY threw them out and replaced them with new mattresses bought in the best baby boutique in town in October 2006.

Elinor&volunteers changing the beds with new mattresses
After: HMHY volunteers helped the nurses throw away the old clothes that were covered in mice droppings. HMHY have made sure the children get what they need and this is because we are present at the orphanage every day to know and do this. All donations in photos have been donated by HMHY or from various local Chinese organisations.
The sorting out of the piles above was recorded on Quzhou TV in March 2007. Now clothes have been sorted out and arranged in the cupboards and all the materials and necessities you see in these photos were donated by HMHY for the children. If the nurse didn't know how to use a material, Ben, Sissi, Sarah, Serena and Elinor the teacher volunteers both Chinese and European/Australian were on hand to help!

Everything was donated to the children by HMHY with the donations sent to them by private people, Christian organisations and International fundraising organisations in Luxembourg. HMHY want to say a huge thank you to everyone involved in helping us make the orphanage a safe and beautiful place for the children to live in. Thanks to Sissi who went in search of pink, purple and yellow soft coats with ears for Hui Hui, BinBin and toggled coats for MingXian and Xi He who wore them all winter! Waterproof covers, all winter coats, blankets, fleeces, cushions, covers, socks, hats, mittens, bottles, creams, dummies and so much more that you see in those cupboards were donated AND used.
Nappies
Before: Children wore rags or old clothes (mainly fleeced or woolen) which caused itching, sores and rashes. They were mainly left in their beds all day long because they didn't have the freedom to move around.
After: As you can see, children are happier, can move around easier and have the freedom to play without smelling of their own urine.
Toys
Before: Children's toys were used to help feed the babies and were often mucky and dirty. Most toys were piles of rags, chairs or cleaning products.
Yes, children were no longer bound to their beds, they could now sit on the floor and play with other children or learn how to walk but this was still not good enough for HMHY. So, HMHY held parties, Christmas parties with Santa bringing presents...
But the concrete floor was worrying, so HMHY decided that they would renovate the orphanage completely and now the children can really play games and have fun with the volunteers
Help Me Help You bought plenty of toys for Christmas and threw out any dirty toys replacing then with clean toys they found in storage boxes and ones Julia had donated in March 2007:
What is better than toys? Answer: HMHY volunteers to play with!
And What's better than playing games? Going on outings and having fun with HMHY volunteers of course!!!!
Bath
Before: Children were flannelled down and some children only had baths once a month. (no pictures)
Elinor washing BinBin in Nov 05
Paul in bath!
After: All children have baths or are bathed at least once a week and are able to have a proper bath in the one HMHY bought for them and with the shampoo, soap and shower gel for sensitive skin!
Toiletries (all donated and used by HMHY & the nurses for the babies and children)
Inside Beds: Everything seen in the After photo was donated by HMHY.
Before: plastic nappy cover, dirty mattresses After: Waterproof cover, blanket, mattress
How babies and Children were Dressed
Before:
Before Ceri holding YuanLi in a thick bundle - can anyone see who the baby is, or even a baby?
Children were dressed very traditionally, the way Children were dressed in China in the 1960-1970s. Although this was okay to an extent, it caused rashes, itchiness and discomfort for alot of babies and children. The leaders of the orphanage allowed us to get rid of these clothes we deemed to be unsuitable because we told them we'd completely replace the clothes with new ones. For this, we are truly thankful to them for that.
After: Ceri holding Yuan Li in the new blankets HMHY bought and donated for the children in December 2006.
