Ok, so you decided to get a college degree!

Now, you need to find a school that is the right fit for you. Here are a few questions to think about when deciding what school will be the best for your career choice:
  • What's the right match? You can choose from a public, private, professional and technical, theological, proprietary/career schools, even online college, but make sure your choice will reflect your goals and your personality. Click here to find out about America's best colleges!
  • Big or small? Do you want to attend a big university with more choices of studies and social activities, but also larger lecture classes? Or would you like fewer choices but more personal attention and a better chance to stand out? You decide.
  • Home or away? Attending a local college versus boarding out of state - what's better? It depends. For some, residence hall life is an important part of the college experience, but commuting from home is less expensive.
  • Which major works? Figuring out what you like doing most, plus what you're best at, can point to the careers you should consider - and what majors will help you reach your career goal.

Think you can't afford to go to college? Think again.

A lot of times, we decide what school we want to go to based on the cost. Here are a few tips to consider when discussing cost.

"Cost of Attendance", as the colleges call it, is made up of:
  • Tuition and fees
  • Books and supplies
  • Room and board
  • Personal expenses (clothing, laundry, recreation)
  • Transportation

One way to go to college and have some financial relief is through scholarships and grants. Generally these are a form of aid that do not need to be paid back.

Scholarships are often awarded based on the following:
  • Academics
  • Athletics
  • A particular field of study
  • Ethnic background
  • Religious affiliation
  • Special interest

Grants are awarded based on financial need (FAFSA) and include:
  • Federal Pell Grant
  • Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)
  • National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant
  • Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant
  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
