ART LEARNING CONCEPTS
 
 

1.  Develop an understanding of meanings, values, and beliefs expresses in works of art which learners use to nourish individual and collective experiences.

 

1.1 The learner should develop a visual presentation of an idea.

1.2 The learner should demonstrate a developmentally appropriate understanding of visual symbols and how they represent meanings.

1.3 The learner should reflect, interpret, and communicate an informed response to visual experiences.

 

1.4   The learner should synthesize information, ideas, and lived-experiences into a meaningful whole in their art work.

 

2. Develop the understanding and application of the principles, structures, and functions of visual art forms.

 

2.1   The learner should select from age-appropriate materials to explore effects based on their characteristics and properties.

           

2.3   The learner should perceive, acknowledge and discriminate among different historical periods of art, using that knowledge in making art, whether by absorbing, adapting, or rejecting such information.

 

2.2         The learner should understand that relationships among parts create a compositional whole.  These parts can be endlessly manipulated for meaning, each change creating a unique visual image, object, or event.

 

3.  Cultivate the technical skills and critical process required for the response to and creation of visual art forms.

 

3.1 Learners should use developmentally appropriate materials and tools and learn established guidelines for their safe use.

 

3.2 Learners should use their knowledge of technical skills to enhance craftsmanship.

 

3.3 Learners should demonstrate the ability to work with age appropriate media, tools, and techniques to understand the process of making visual images.

 

4.  Reflect upon and respond to the influences of time, culture, and environment inherent in visual art forms.

 

4.1     Learners should know that art is a means through which a culture is defined.

 

4.2     Learners should understand that art is an object and/or event made by someone who is influences by the time and environment in which they live.

 

4.3     Learners should understand how art can be used as a powerful tool for change.

 

4.4     Learners should understand that art affect them emotionally and intellectually.

 

4.5     Learners should be aware of cultural institutions as alternate learning environments.
