PRC Beginning Rowing ProgramRowing offers many benefits, from fitness to socializing to recreation. And it’s never too late to start. The Putney Rowing Club has members of all ages and from all walks of life. Some took up the sport for the first time as an adult; others have been rowing since high school.
Each spring the Putney Rowing Club offers interested people a comprehensive introduction to the sport. Beginners, no matter what age, are first taught the fundamentals of the stroke and concepts of sweep rowing, (one oar) followed by instruction in sculling (two oars). They have an opportunity to try sculling in singles, doubles and quads. Depending on interest, beginners can also try sweep rowing in pairs and/or fours. Stretching and safety are also taught at the beginners’ clinics. The experienced coaches are available to answer all of your questions.
Important things to know: there are no life jackets in rowing shells, so swimming ability is required. Rowing attire includes close-fitting shorts or pants and t-shirts, layers for cool weather; a hat for hot weather and gym shoes for land sessions. Always bring water for hydration.
Beginner rowing clinincs are held in conjuction with the Brattleboro Outing Club rowing program (RowBOC). Beginner rowers must successfully complete 12 hours of instruction, at which point they can join the Putney Rowing Club or RowBOC or both.
