This is one of the easiest and fastest ways to cast-on.
It's especially useful when casting on stitches in the middle of a piece (such as buttonholes) or adding on to the side of a piece (if sleeves are knit as part of the garment). Care must be taken that the tension of the cast-on stitches remains even.
The tutorial below shows stitches being added to the Left Side of a piece of knitting.

Step 1:
Ready to cast on stitches at the end of a row |
Step 2:
Place thumb (or finger) behind yarn
Step 3:
Turn thumb so it is pointing up; yarn is wound counter-clockwise around thumb
Step 4:
Push tip of needle, from bottom to top, under yarn on thumb
Step 5:
Either
a) carefully pull thumb down to remove it from the yarn loop
or
b) push the needle up to push the loop off the thumb
Step 6:
Pull gently to snug up the loop on the needle
Do not pull too tight as this will make knitting into these cast-on stitches too difficult. Try to keep a constant tension.
| |
Repeat Steps 2 - 6 until desired number of stitches have been cast on
