You don't have to audition or be able to read music to sing with us.
We always start with a warm-up to help free our voices for singing. This includes gentle stretches and playing with our voices. We often sing a simple round or chant.
Then we split into parts to sing in harmony. You can sing whatever part you fancy. Sing the part where you feel most comfortable. This could be the melody or high or low or the doo wops in a doo wop song! Take your pick but remember you should be enjoying yourself. Don’t worry if you don’t know the song because you missed the session when it was originally taught. Some of us forget anyway! Nothing we sing should be too difficult to pick up with the help of other Cats and our Teachers.
The style of song could be almost anything. We might sing African, East European, South American, British, Popular, Doo Wop, Gospel, Swing… the list is endless. You can see our song catalogue here: http://docs.google.com/View?id=dhtw9zqh_1mpkk6vfv and you can find some audio files recorded at Cats here: Audio files (Please note: the sound quality of these recordings is very variable. The choir sounds much better than this in real life! The files are included here merely as an indication of the style of singing and as a reminder for choir members of some of our songs).
We have a break half way through for drinks and biscuits. |
