The 10th Annual Graduate Interdisciplinary Symposium on the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Kevin Cramer Keynote topic: "This Is Not War, It Is the End of the World:
The Nature of Historical Gothic" When: April 3-4, 2009
Where: Purdue University
Now that the conference is finished, we would like to thank everybody involved, especially our excellent Keynote Speaker, for making it an unqualified success! Each presentation was a thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening event, and we wish everybody who participated nothing but good luck in their future work and other endeavors. Thanks Again!!!!! -- The Committee War and conflict have shaped the world we live in for
thousands of years. Though the reasons given for war may differ, the
consequences have little changed over this long period of time: misery, death,
disease, and poverty are but a few of the results of the battles fought over
the centuries. At the same time, many people still believe in the concept of a
“just war,” a war whose benefits outweigh its costs. Whatever the causes of
war, both written and spoken forms of language have played an enormous role, both
in the justification for and the rejection of armed conflict. This conference
will examine how themes of war and peace are portrayed in world literature and
film in addition to how language itself is used to either erect barriers
between warring cultures, or tear them down.
