We've done it! We arrived safely back in Durban on 25th June 2009 - 433 days after leaving and 15 countries later. Thanks so much for all the people who've assisted us, hosted us, and ecouraged us. It has been an amazing experience that we will treasure forever. The links on the left will all be updated shortly to fill you in on all our stories. We look forward to catching up with friends and family.
Nick and Nix
How it began...
After more than a year of dreaming, planning and panel beating, we and our trusty steed, The Lady, finally headed out and beyond the wild streets of East London suburbia. A decade later than most; but we were finally having our 'gap year'.
We left East London on 18th April 2008 for a month of preparation and visitation in Durban. We then travelled around SA for 10 days before heading to Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe for 3 weeks. We cut back into SA through Mapungubwe and Kruger National Parks on our way to our temporary new home in Mozambique. Nick worked on a road project in Maputo for 6 months (June to December 2008) while Nix completed her masters' research. We are now heading northwards.
We will first explore the coast of Mozambique before heading across to Malawi for Christmas with the Heslops. Our route and timing from then on is still a bit vague but is planned to be: Tanznaia - Rwanda - Uganda - Kenya - Ethiopia - Sudan. Because of bureaucratic issues, we plan to leave the car in Sudan and backpack through Egypt and back to Sudan. We will then drive the trusty 'Lady' back along a slightly different route to be home by the end of June 2009.
