Unicron Trilogy‎ > ‎

Unicron

Tell me, if you have chance, money, and space and like Transformers especially the ’86 movie, who won’t want to get the big bad Unicron. I wasn’t really sure I want to get him or not couple years ago because of his size and price. Especially I got my Primus in a very cheap price, I was hoping I could find the similar deal to Unicron. Nearly impossible and I did once in Goodwill but he was way too “battle” damaged. Until recently finally my wife gave me a nod about getting this big fella, and I was so lucky a friend of mine from TFA was trying to sell him (he got the 2010 new version). A trade deal was negotiated and done. I got a complete Unicron and imported him from UK.

No need to mention his alternate mode (or his true mode), it’s a planet. Not a perfect sphere like Primus but a planet wrapped around with a wire/rim thing. The big planet eating mouth is there and functional. Not really eating though but can be shut and opened. Don’t quite like the transparent panels that cover about half of the planet plus he doesn’t provide too much details to see through. He has total 6 missiles to launch and can only be activated by mini-cons. He is so big plus the wire that will take out so much space to display him in the planet mode. Also because of his shape, he is really hard to display as the mouth forward.

Unlike Primus who needs the omega lock or something else to transform, Unicron doesn’t need that and the transformation is very straight forward and also kind of similar to what he did in the movie. Finally, finally I have a bot bigger than Primus. Unicron dwarfs everyone else. He is so big but so poseable and well balanced thanks to his big feet. Being this big, he has so many gimmicks. His eyes can light up by pushing down the button on top of the head. All 5 fingers are articulated and can light up his right hand when pushing it in. A big chest canon/missile can be triggered by push a mini-con on his back. 3 missiles are on each leg and can be triggered same way in his stomach. His stomach can be opened to store mini-cons and each leg has a slot to open for mini-con storage as well. If the size is right, some mini-cons can be put on his shoulder as well. Since he was released in the Armada line, the mini-con interaction is the main focus. He has so much more docking points and places to dock or store mini-cons than Primus. All the sudden, I just feel I have too few mini-cons that before I felt they are useless and gave them to kids. His mini-cons is also a planet (or moon) called Dead-End. Dead-End’s robot mode is fairly not practical but his sphere mode provides one more cannon for Unicron in either mode.

Unicron does have few flaws. The major one is the transparent panels. In robot mode, they are now two huge pieces of panels hanging on his back and there is no place to secure them and they don’t look good as well. Even though they can be detached easily but I like to keep them on. So a solution I’ve found is by using a transparent rubber band coming from the toy to tight them both together. They are then barely visible from the front and don’t just swinging on the back. The other one is the hip ratchet joints. With only one click for each, the legs are opening too wide which looks a little bit strange. I really he has one more in between so his legs do not either shut tight or open wide.

Transformation: 7 – Fairly easy and don’t need a lock or pen to do it.
Fun: 10 – He is huge and he has total about 27 mini-con dock points to interact with mini-cons. Besides, he is a planet eating planet and robot mode is very poseable.
Display: 9 – Because of his size, he is hard to display. But once you find the space, he displays well but hard in planet mode.
Value: 9 – Not counting the shipping from UK (he is really heavy), two deluxe classes (Tracks and Thunderwing) to trade for this big guy in perfect condition. A perfect deal to make body sides happy.
Overall: 9 – He is fun, he is big, and he is Unicron.
