Powerglide

In G1 cartoon, Powerglide is one of the minibots that we don’t want to think about the logic, whose alternate mode is a huge A-10 jet but robot mode is smaller than a truck. He was a fun character but I was never a fan of him especially his spotlight episode “The Girl Who Loved Powerglide” made me want to puke. He was pretty much no show after G1 cartoon and so did his toys until Universe 2.0 ultra class and I never bothered picking up that mold as well. For some unknown reasons, Powerglide went quite popular in 2011. He had a new Cyberverse commander class in DOTM toy line and few third party companies were creating toys based on him. As he wasn’t quite available at retail stores, I didn’t bother hunt for him and always took him off the shelf when I found him and then put him back. Only until recently there are $5 off coupon that I can use, I decide to give him a try.

Powerglide’s alternate mode is what he always is, an A-10. While not a fan of this jet, this toy looks fairly nice with a lot of details and nice color scheme. He is heavily armed with missiles and machine guns underneath the wings. While looking good, the biggest issue of this toy is when I pull down all the landing gears, he cannot stay on the ground firmly. Because of the landing gear position, the tail end is always heavier than the nose which makes him always leaning up like taking off. Don’t know if this is just me, but if he is always like that, how can I display him in alt mode?

Transformation is simple but the arms part is fiddly. The size of this new class isn’t really a scout class. It is somewhat in between a scout class and a legend class. The legs design looks odd but okay. The wing kibble on each arm is somewhat annoying but you need to position them right. One thing that bothers me more is the peg that connects to his shoulder panel. It doesn’t connect tightly that is somewhat loose and easily disconnect when moving the arms. I use super glue to make them thicker but that only helps a little. The weapons also look kind of strange. These two missile sets can be held individually or combine in to one but it just looks like a pile of missiles stacking together. Well, I guess it’s better than empty hands. Initially I was hoping he can be a good addition in my classics, but now he seems like belong to nowhere. He isn’t quite fit with classics and his scale is not right with other movie scout (the scale issue is the main reason I didn’t pick up many DOTM toys). I have the same feeling on Hubcap but at least Hubcap is at the right scale. So I will see.

Transformation: 5 – No difficult but arms are quite fiddly. He does transform into nice A-10 mode but unfortunately the shoulder pieces do not lock in place.
Fun: 6 – Flying the jet around is fun but he cannot land. Robot mode is okay but the shoulder part always leaves the place.
Display: 7 – He looks good but I can’t find where to put him. Out of scale with movie stuffs and doesn’t look perfectly right (such as Breacher) with classics.
Value: 10 – I won’t complain anything for only $2.99.
Overall: 6 – He is definitely a pass for me if he doesn’t cost that cheap. Meanwhile he is probably only worth that much.
