Megatron

I have very minor collections of movie figures and few of them even migrated to support classics figures especially for Decepticons. So mostly my movie figures are in alternate mode since I love those earth based alt mode. Except four leaders, Prime, Jetfire, Brawl, and Starscream who are in bot mode. Who is missing? Ya, the big bad Megatron.

I never like Megatron’s Cybertronian modes in the first two movies and always hope he will adopt an earth mode. Finally in the third movie, he has one. Even though a truck, I have no complain. Oh wait! What is it? A voyager class? Where is his freaking leader class when there is one finally I want to pick up? After a little wait, there was no news about a leader Megatron in wave 1 or wave 2, nor did Botcon showed anything. So I finally gave up and picked out the voyager class. Well, it there is a leader class in the future, there is always an eBay I can sell the voyager one, right?

Megatron’s alternate mode is a MACK truck, or a Mad Max truck. Personally I don’t mind Megatron being a truck as many fans objected. This time around Hasbro is really shrinking all movie figures. This truck looks long itself but if you really compare to other line figures, he is quite small as a voyager class. Anyway, the truck is very highly detailed even with a soft rubber at the end as a cover. Behind a cab where the trailer connects, it can be turned slightly left and right to make the truck looks like turning. This is a very nice touch. Colorwise he is quite bland. Even with gray, silver, and brown, they all just look too similar. If I decide to keep him for long, kitbashing him will be necessary. Around the door there are two c-clips socket. I found he looks fantastic if I clip Backfire’s guns on each side. His fusion cannon is stored on the trailer and can be mounted on the cab roof, but I think that rubbish.

Transforming him isn’t that difficult, but he has more panels to flip and rotate around comparing to Shockwave. Megatron now has a cape. It totally reminds me the Gundam Crossbone. With this cape, Megatron looks mysterious and evil but because it has to lock in place, his arms cannot move much. He is very well detailed but the color is still kind of bland. The legs are rather thick but feet are not big. Luckily he does not have any balance issues since his whole body is well balanced. If taking the cape out, he can pose very well. But on the other hand, he kind of looses that evil feeling. The fusion cannon can be mounted on his back or on either arms (right one, of course). The only problem is the peg isn’t that tightly connecting to the arm so when you raise the arm horizontally, the cannon tip will drop slightly unless you manually fix that every time. Also since he has quite thin arms and the shoulder joints are not that tight, the cannon is a little bit too heavy. So if I want to pose him at firing forward, it’s best to find some angles that can hold the arm steady. The two machine guns from Backfire can still be clipped on his legs or back and they looks like good additional.

Transformation: 7 – Not difficult but more panels to flip around. Maybe just mine, the front cap us so tightly connected and very hard to separate.
Fun: 9 – Excellent truck mode. He can’t pose much with cape on. But with cape out, he can pose well and no kibbles blocking movement. Only the joints aren’t that tight.
Display: 8 – On either mode, he should mix in with more darker colors. Otherwise he looks too bland.
Value: 8 - $18.77 at Walmart. I can’t deny the price for a voyager class that is well made with very few issues.
Overall: 8 – For my own taste, he is the best Megatron among all other movie Megatrons and he has two decent modes. Only if there is (or will be) a leader class, I will be more happy.
