Thunderwing

Recently don’t know since when, maybe ROTF Bludgeon, that Hasbro released comic book character toys that went quite popular (plus the mold is good, too, like Bludgeon), Hasbro started releasing more and more comic characters into the toy. Now here goes Thunderwing, a big name in the pretenders. I haven’t seen him in the Marvel days but only on the DW’s Stormbringer. He was cool, that’s all. And when a toy comes out in his name, I want him into my classic collections.

Thunderwing’s alternate mode is a jet, a fictional good looking jet. Cockpit is orange and can see through and the two guns can be stored at the bottom of each wing. Overall the jet looks very nice and sleek except the two arms are clearly being seen hanging underneath. Detail is good but as Hasbro is recently reporting cutting down expense by reducing paint usage, the paint job here is somewhat lacking more details. It just feels like fans have to add more details by themselves if they are confident at their painting skills or wait and get stickers from Reprolabels. On the nosecone is a detachable drone. It is a nice addition but does not do much either.

The transformation scheme is fairly easy as box suggested (level 2). Details are still decent and he looks better painted in robot mode. The wings look really heavy on him but he has quite good balance. His light pipe works okay but the light has to shoot from certain angle to make it work. The drone can still be detached in robot mode and the two guns can be stored on the wings or hold in hands. More bonus feature, the two guns can combine into one and he can hold it in one hand or both hands. Articulations are pretty basic but the biggest problem is his shoulder guns. They look nice though but totally block and limit his arm movements. At least they are made by soft rubber and bendable but still difficult to move the arms freely. It also would be better if his head is on a more flexible ball joint. Another thing that I shouldn’t complain about but still want to is his size. He is a deluxe class and his height is pretty much the same as Starscream’s. So if you are really a Sormbringer fan and cares about the scale, he will totally disappoint you since he is much shorter than classics Jetfire and ROTF Bludgeon.

Transformation: 7 – Fairly easy, but I tend to be careful on folding the tail wings. The drone is very tightly connected.
Fun: 9 – He has solid jet mode, a drone as bonus, and a well balance robot mode with two guns to swing. Only problem is this shoulder guns that limit the arm movement and posing abilities.
Display: 9 – He displays nicely in either mode, plus he balances well so don’t have to worry about tipping over.
Value: 7 – Since I have no patient and ordered him from Hasbro Toy Shop, he is at $10.79 after 10% down from original but I got free shipping.
Overall: 8 – Overall he is good at being a good toy. Easy transformation, solid in both modes and well balanced, basic articulations, and nice weapons and extra drone. I have nothing picky on him but only the shoulder guns that limit the arm movement.
