Scourge

In G1 cartoon (mainly the movie and season 3 and 4), Scourge was never as shine as Cyclonus but got quite a few spotlights and screen times and showed a lot of characteristics. He was actually being a little bit more chicken/coward (and actually more seasonable and realistic) and luckily not being Galvatron’s targeting punch bag like Cyclonus was. Later for some reason, he clearly got more love than his upper class commander Cyclonus that he became a powerful Prime’s clone in RiD and a planet leader in Cybertron where Cyclonus only appeared in Armada. In the year of 2010 and 2011, Hasbro released quite a few redesigned popular G1 characters including Scourge. Let me ignore the Sweeps for now.

Before star anything, first of all I have to complain his stats (even though most kids might not care). How in the world Scourge has every stat higher than Cyclonus except the rank? This is the G1 we are talking about here. We’ve all seen how he performed on the screen but seemed like Hasbro just carried those over from his super class RiD or Cybertron form. Titanium line’s stats (8,8,8,7,8,8,7,7) makes more sense actually. Anyway, move on.

Coincidentally or intentionally by Hasbro or not, Boeing has designed concept green jets for 2025 and Scourge almost exactly looks like that. Flat and wide and body is mainly in blue and wings are all in white. Some join lines are easy to see due to Hasbro’s lack of paint jobs but can easily be covered and looked better after adding blue on the panel edge. The blue line on the jet nose is cut at the wings. Thought about painting the extended blue line on the wings but since my son is still heavily playing him, I might wait until later to prevent scratches. His trademark head-sticking-up flying mode can be represented here as well. The most beautiful part is his two weapons can be stored in the wings so that won’t affect his stealth (but the wings are kind of hard to open though). The two front landing gears are very tight to pull down and the back one is impossible to pull down unless rotating the engine first, pull it down and then rotate back. The jet itself isn’t too much but it’s highly detailed and sturdy enough to grab and fly around.

Scourge’s transformation is almost a nightmare. Hasbro has put a lot of engineering to transform him from a wide and flat jet to a sleek robot, but over complicated for a deluxe class. There are too many places that are too tight to move around and I have to worry about not breaking anything or bending my nails or hurting my fingers. Well, people might say tight is better than loose, right? The hip ball joints should be tight but they’re actually loose that later I have to fix them. Took me awhile to figure out everything initially without instruction, he should have more fun transformation if things are moving more smooth. Now to the robot mode. Again, how in the world Hasbro messed this up. He has BLUE eyes (just like they did on classics Megatron’s green)! Even the back card had the eyes in red. And the light pipe doesn’t even work well (at least Megatron’s works pretty well). I just can’t resist myself to paint them red and that looks much better to give him much more evil feel. Again back to the robot mode. The two huge wings are hanging on his back that causes him some balance issues even though the legs and feet are poseable but not that strong enough to hold the heavy back. The arms swing freely front and back but look strange if side by side due to the shoulder design. So, anything good about him? He is highly detailed and well painted in robot mode besides the eyes. He also has quite a few movements on the ankle joints that can help his feet stick on the ground. The two big wings, even though sacrifice his balance, can be repositioned and adjust the angle so you can have different look for the Sweeps (if any). The two guns can hold in his hands individually and can combine into one. It would be much nicer if his weapon is his Targetmaster. Just too bad these good can’t overcome his problems.

Transformation: 4 – Too tight and over complicated even though there are a lot of engineering inside.
Fun: 5 – His robot mode suffers balance issue due to the large wings and the transformation draws the fun down.
Display: 9 – Truly, he looks very nice in either mode. He can make some cool poses if you can find the balance.
Value: 7 - Ordered him from Hasbro Toy Shop at $10.79 after 10% down. Only this time I need to pay the shipping.
Overall: 6 – A highly anticipated figure for me but end up disappointing due to the transformation and balance issue. There are many neat ideas that Hasbro threw on him but unfortunately couldn’t do them right. Guess I am done with the mold no matter who he will be retooled/repainted into.
