Octane

I’ve seen him at retail stores. Didn’t pick him up because I don’t think I will like him. Glad I made that choice couple years ago. Since then, I don’t know why I still want to own him despite knowing all of his bad reviews. He has been popping on and off on my watch list for a while and I never made the purchase because of the price. You know, a bad figure should have low price this sort of thing. Finally, saw an ad on craiglist for only 5 bucks so I decide to give him a try.

Octane’s first alternate mode is a C-130 style cargo plane. From the top it looks quite nice. But from any other angles, you will see all the empty spots, extra stuffs, and kibbles. In fact, it looks really ugly. The big flat thing was just used to cover all the kibbles from being seen at the bottom and it doesn’t make the plane look better. At least, the four engine propellers are rotatable.

Octane’s second alternate mode is a M978 style fueler. This mode is even worse than the plane mode. All the extra, missing, and kibbles are even more and obvious to see. There are even one wheel on each side does not roll due to the robot mode. That big flat thing again was serving the same purpose to cover all kibbles on the top  but still make the whole truck look ugly.

Now to the robot mode. This mode should be his best mode out of the three. It is true. But comparing to other robots, he is still really bad. First, his head. The head is badly sculpted and doesn’t even lift all the way up. So if I need to turn his head, it has to pull up a little bit in order for the jaws to squeeze by the plastic around it. Then the high shoulders. They are meaningless high and do not provide any flexible movement. The arms are mounted on a not rotatable wheel so his upper arms are so thin and short. Can’t move much as well. Also the hand is badly designed by just rotating plane cockpit. His legs and body has the sailor Moon syndrome, the legs are too long with very short thigh. All the kibbles behind the lower legs are limiting the knee bending angles. He has two small guns and can combine into one. Another hilarious weapon is that big flat thing again. I really don’t know what that is but it can open up to look like a one side saw weapon. Describing it as shark jaw is probably more appropriate. It all doesn’t matter but what it really matter is it is totally useless and ugly. If Hasbro really had so much more extra plastics to use, why don’t they use it to improve the whole figure, like shoulders, legs, plane mode, or tuck mode instead of this I don’t know what it is weapon. Octane looks good enough with those two guns.

Transformation: 3 – A triple changer but none of the three modes looks good. Robot mode is slightly better, though.
Fun: 2 – The two alt modes has no fun. The robot mode is very hard to make some good poses.
Display: 3 – The alt modes make my eye sore. The robot mode can trick you by the look, if you don’t touch him.
Value: 2 – Even I got him at $5, he is still not worth the purchase.
Overall: 2 – Did I say anything good about him? He is really one of the worst TFs that have been ever made. Comparing Astrotrain to him, Astrotrain is now so much better toy.
