Grapple

Well, at least I don’t need to worry about trademark in my review. So I will call this guy his original name, Grapple, not Grappel Hasbro. I was not really a fan of Grapple in G1. Even though his spotlight episode Master Builder was a fun episode, he was not that type of character that I would like. When I had trouble hunting Inferno and the news of Grapple came out, I was really tempting to get one. But then after I got Inferno and experienced this mold, I passed Grapple. Not even when he was in discount store. Until one day I saw a brilliant customizer used this mold to build a character who I was dreaming to own, I went out to hunt Grapple. Luckily he was still in the discount store.

Grapple’s alternate mode is a crane truck. Besides color and the crane, everything else looks the same with Inferno. The crane can rotate and extend and the truck rolls well, and that’s pretty much. Since he shares identical features with Inferno, I’m not addressing too much here.

Transformation scheme is the same, quite easy. Grapple’s robot mode looks very plain. Maybe because of the color and use of plastic, he just looks cheaper than Inferno. And his elbow joints and legs joints are all quite loose, at least he can still stand and they can be fixed. The panel on each arm is molded in which cannot rotate like Inferno’s. Like Inferno, his crane is hanging underneath his right arm. The crane can act like a melee weapon but I see no point of it. Cybertron Mudflap kind of shares the same feature but at least he got a blade molded in to the crane. The biggest flaw on this figure is the open palms. Recently many Hasbro Transformers have open palms but at least they are able to hold standard weapons. But what Grapple has are just palms that they cannot hold anything unless I special make one for him. What on Cybertron is Hasbro thinking about creating a toy that cannot hold any accessories? He is not a legend or scout class, this is a big voyager class. Bad, bad, bad design.

Transformation: 6 - Since Inferno scored 7, I will give him 6 because Hasbro played laziness on removing the arm panel rotatable joints.
Fun: 1 – A crane truck that is just a truck (Cybertron Mudflap is a much better counterpart). Then a robot in war that does not have any weapon nor hold anything in his hands? Shame on Hasbro.
Display: 7 – He doesn’t look any better than Inferno.
Value: 5 – Even just $9.99 from the discount store, he doesn’t deserve it. Get him only if you are a big fan of Grapple or this mold. Of you are like me, plan on using him for something else.
Overall: 4 – Not a good toy actually and he will never make it to my display. Once I’m done with my current project and got all the pieces I need, I will start working on him.
