I really was not planning on getting Kre-O Sideswipe as both his modes did not impress me much. But due to TRU’s buy one get one 50% off deal and I want Ratchet, I need to get another one. So I chose Sideswipe since I love red sports car plus there weren’t too many choices as well.
At the same price, Sideswipe has more pieces (220 total) than Ratchet along with more different style pieces. The sports car is quite big comparing to the same price Ratchet. It does look good but does not have many smooth parts like Lego Ferrari to make it sleek (well, I can live with that because same parts need to be used as robot). The doors have to have some angles which I don’t really like and I’m totally fine with the plastic one piece tires. The mini figures are sweet as usual but mini Sideswipe’s helmet is too tight that I cannot remove or move it after putting on. Which is shame because it will be more fun if the robot helmet and face can be switched between each other, and I don’t want to cause any scratches or stress marks on the head. Mini Sideswipe is fine driving himself but has to remove the seat.
More pieces means tearing him apart and rebuilding him takes more time. Now in robot mode, don’t know whose idea but they totally messed up Sideswipe’s head. His head color is black, same in cartoon and his toys. Red Alert is the one who got messed up but should not be Sideswipe. Unless Hasbro’s initial intention is to build Red Alert, otherwise this is wrong. Also why the heck did they give him that kind of strange and ugly twisting arms and legs while you can easily fix that with straight and normal limbs? They look so much better after the modification and I can do even better if I throw in more pieces. Anyway, besides these two major flaws, Sideswipe’s robot mode is nice. Chest is quite bulky and arms are not low. His trademark shoulder cannon is missing but you can easily build it from left over pieces. He can also pose nicely with very good balance and all the ball joints are tight.
Transformation: N/A. Nothing to say.
Fun: 10 – He took longer to switch modes but it’s fun to build. Plus there are enough left over pieces to add stuffs in each mode. Display: 9 – I have to take out one point due to the wrong color head. The twisted arms and legs, I can fix easily. But the red rubber head, I may have to paint it over if I can’t stand. Value: 10 - $19.99 from TRU. Good value with 220 pieces. There will be much more if as Lego product. Overall: 9 – Very nice but not as perfect as Ratchet. The Kre-O sets are growing in me more and more but I really have to watch my expense now even they are already cheaper. |
