To Advisors and Chapters of the Arizona Region:

My apologies to all for the lack of communication.  It was exciting to announce at International that we were going to be able to utilize the Barrett Honors College for our Leadership Institute: Honors in Action spring meeting (June 4-5).  The Barrett Honors College is a brand new facility which opened in August 2009.  This is the first summer for them to have non-ASU activities; their personnel are busy checking out students from the dorms etc. I have been in touch with my list of questions and their coordinator will get back to me.  So far, I have asked a lot of “good questions” about parking, meal times, etc.  She is looking for the answers.  In the meantime, please be aware that our specific program is tentative until we get confirmed times for meals etc.  However, we need to get registration counts as soon as possible so please try to register now!

We are fortunate to have Jennifer Stanford, Dean of Service Learning, as our headquarters representative.  She will address the group on Friday about Hallmark changes and will facilitate a workshop on Saturday on the Competitive Edge.  Our general format is that Friday will be devoted to Honors in Action research and planning with presentations on Saturday morning, followed by workshops focused on leadership and chapter programming.  There is a planning block to get your chapter started.  Please note that due to the heat in Phoenix we will NOT be doing an outdoor service activity.

We will be using the Barrett Refractory (affectionately called the “Harry Potter Room”) for our general sessions.  It is wireless so PLEASE bring your laptops as chapter planning will be much easier if you can document as you go.

In general, the host chapters are responsible for programming BUT there is an opportunity for your chapter to present.  Tentative workshop topics include:

1. 5-Star Chapter Development

2. Phi Theta Kappa 101

3. Effective Membership Campaigns

4. Enhanced Membership

5. College Fish

6. Building an Effective Chapter Officer Team

7. Scholarship Opportunities

8. Running for Regional or International Office

If your chapter would like to facilitate/present one of these, please contact me at helen.smith@smcmail.maricopa.edu with the subject header “Workshop Volunteer”.  Understand that we may have more than one volunteer and the host chapters reserve the right to select from those who apply.  Deadline to volunteer is MAY 25th .

The registration fee is firm at $80 for all student members. As is customary, to thank advisors for their contributions to the success of chapter programs, advisor registrations are complimentary (but advisors must submit a registration form),   Rooms are available on Friday night and all participants are expected to stay on campus.  You will have to bring sleeping bags and/or bedding and towels etc. See packet.

We plan to have registration and a box lunch available from 12 noon to 2 pm.  (Please allow enough time to check in to the dorms.)  Siew Yee will do a crafts class for those who have asked how to make “Hearts for Haiti”.  The actual program will start at 2 pm and go until 9 pm and start up on Saturday with an early breakfast.  Advisors asked for a shorter program than last year in order to conserve time and money with our tight college budgets.

Please look for e-mail updates.  Thank you for your patience.

Several people have asked if it is "compulsory" to stay over nigth at Barrett during the Leadership Institute. Here is the "official word": "The complete experience includes staying overnight for additional fellowship or work on the Honors in Action project, and a quick look at dorm life, it is understandable that some local people may want to commute. While not encouraged, participants may elect NOT to stay in the dorms. However, there cannot be a reduction in the registration cost as the conference is based on a minimum number of participants."

More FAQ info:
The expectation for Phi Theta Kappa events is that is to be NO consumption of alcoholic beverages. I am unaware of any places to purchase alcohol at the university.

I will also check on a "curfew" time. NAU did not have one last year so it would surprise me if ASU had one but I will check on that also.

Advisors are expected to set the rules for their chapters - if you wish to allow the students to attend a movie, that is fine, but I presume you will go with them.
