March Madness!

It’s March Madness Time!

Q: What’s March Madness you say?

A: Well, for all of you academic minded people out there, March Madness is the NCAA Basketball championship - 64 college teams get invited to the tournament, but only one will win!

Q: So, what does this have to do with Psi Chi?

A: Well, Psi Chi is using March Madness as a service event! We will be having a bracket challenge, and the winner will get a basket of prizes from College Park businesses. For each bracket, we are requesting $5 to donate to the Family Crisis Center of Prince George’s County.

Q: So, how does a bracket challenge work?

A: A bracket challenge works in the following way: Start with the 64 teams invited to the tournament. Predict who will be the winners of the first round of games, leaving 32 teams. Then predict the winners of those games as the number of teams goes from 32 to 16, from 16 to 8, from 8 to the final four, then the 2, and finally the champion of the tournament!

Q: I’m not a sports minded person, how can I fill out my bracket?

A: Have you heard of Google? Seriously, ask your friends to participate! Find the March Madness guru’s in your dorm, or club, or classes and ask them to help support the Family Crisis center and pick their brain for the best picks! There’s all sorts of ways to predict the winner. You could even donate multiple times and submit extra brackets just to hedge your bets!

Q: When is this happening?

A: It’s called March Madness for a reason, silly! The 68 teams participating in the tournament are selected on Sunday, March 13th. So after that day, you can fill out your brackets.

Q: 68 teams? I thought the bracket challenge was 64 teams!

A: The bracket challenge IS 64 teams. There are 4 “wildcard” type spots, so there is a round called “first four” to compete for the wildcard spots. So even though most of the teams aren’t playing in that round, there is still some prediction involved with putting the 64 teams on your bracket sheet. We will only be considering the predictions for the 64 teams when deciding the winner.

Q: How do I win?

A: Out of all the brackets we collect, the winning bracket is made by the person who guesses the most number of games correctly. So we will count up the number of correct basketball game winners on each bracket and let the person who predicts the most winners know!

Q: How is Psi Chi turning this into a service event?

A: On Tuesday, March 15th, Psi Chi will have a table at stamp to collect donations for the Family Crisis Center, and to hand out and collect brackets. This service event counts towards active membership, if you volunteer to promote the event  for 2 half hour shifts at the table and bring your donation and bracket!  We encourage all Psi Chi members, current applicants, and family and friends to help promote this event and to enjoy March Madness! Please email Psi Chi to let us know if you would like to volunteer to sit at the table on Tuesday so you can help promote this service event at Stamp!

Q: Where can I get a basic bracket?

A: Our Psi Chi bracket is available to download from this page. This is the updated bracket with the initial teams filled in.

Q: What do I need to do with this bracket?

A: Fill in the teams, and mark the winner of each game. Also, make sure you write your name, and contact information (email and phone). We'd also like to see the name of the person, most likely a Psi Chi member who got you to fill out the bracket. We are curious to see who can get the most brackets from their friends!

Q: I don't want to find the names of all 64 teams. Will the Psi Chi board be helping with this?

A: Yes! As soon as we know who the teams are we will be sending out the updated bracket! This will happen on Sunday, March 13!

Thanks!
