The Herriot Way is a four day circular walk in Swaledale and Wensleydale following in the footsteps of the famous Yorkshire Dales vet, James Herriot.  James Herriot's love of the dales, the people who lived here and his work inspired him to write and his first novel 'All Creatures Great and Small' became the basis of the popular BBC television series of the same name.   The Herriot Way Walk originally stopped at the four Youth Hostels of Keld, Grinton (near Reeth), Asgarth and Hawes.  Since the closure of Keld and Asgarth walkers now choose to stay in a mixture of Youth Hostels, Inns and Bed and Breakfast accommodation.  The 55 miles walk is classed as medium difficulty and is a pleasant combination of high fell walking over Great Shunner, from Wensleydale into Swaledale, and Grinton Moor complimented by two days of more leisurely strolls along the valley bottoms of the two dales.  A useful guide when preparing for this walk is 'Walking the Herriot Way' by Stuart J Grieg but also visit www.heriotway.com for lots of supplimentary information.    Traditionally the walk starts in Asgarth but its circular nature means you can start and finish anywhere you like and where better to start your dales holiday than at Pry House Farm, Keld.  Pry House is a traditional dales farmhouse, of a type that James Herriot would have visited many, many times during the course of his vetinary work.  The Pry House Herriot Way package is a mixture of dales exploration with the Herriot Way sandwiched in between.    Suggested itinary: Three nights bed and breakfast at Pry House Farm commencing Saturday evening.  During your stay take advantage of your motor car and explore the Yorkshire Dales.  For those interested in James Herriot then a visit to the World of James Herriot in Thirsk is a must and highly recommended.  Visit www.worldofjamesherriot.org for further details.  On Tuesday morning set off on The Herriot Way returning to Pry House on Friday for your final nights stay and complimentary 2 course, home cooked evening meal.  Luggage can be safely left at Pry House when you go off on the walk and off road parking is available for your car.  Please phone or email for availablity and discounted room rates for this holiday package.
