to the "working site" of Providence, RI's Extraordinary Rendition Band.

An Open, Community Based Street Band begun in November of 2008, we organized around the principles that:

-We are an Open Band of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion, (and just about anything else)  for people of all ages and levels of ability.
-We are not playing to get rich or to get famous, but to build community and share joy with each other and with our audiences.
-We operate in a democratic way that promotes artistic excitement
-We will play in the streets for human rights, peace, justice, economic equality, community celebrations, or any other vision we support.
-We encourage musical expression both by being an Open Band, and also by pursuing interaction and music education with audiences at varying levels.
-We hope to bring music to public spaces as much as possible, playing free, guerrilla style and in the streets whenever we can.
-We aim to please when the cause is true and the time is right!

Some more details:

Open Band
Our goal is to be as much of an Open Band as possible, meaning anyone can come and play and participate regardless of experience as long as they and the group feel comfortable at a personal and musical level.  For example, it's totally cool for anyone to come who is trying to learn an instrument, but they will need to feel comfortable with that learning process and understand that it takes effort and time, and we will try to support each other in that process.  Our goal is to develop "sections" with internal leadership to help teach and guide, but in some cases that may be limited.  Also, they will need to be willing to participate in, and help develop the group processes of the band.  Finally, they would need to be willing to commit to a weekly practice whenever possible.

Practice Details:
So far we have been getting together once or twice a week, usually on Thursdays from  7 to 10 (sometimes on Esten Ave. in Pawtucket, other times on Esten St. in Smith Hill, or in Olneyville, the West End, or Pawtuxet Village).  We try to do an additional day when possible and when not playing a gig.  We try to start promptly, get right into songs, shift responsibility for leading practice between members, and bring up any necessary business when needed.  We also try to have the person who brings a song lead the direction it goes in, while coming to a concencus on it's arrangement as a group.  Finally, we try to chip in to put together written, mp3, and youtube versions and share them ahead of time so we can practice ahead of time and support learner

Range of Music:
As the history and present state of brass, drum, marching, and roving bands shows, they are part of a rich and diverse history of styles, influences, cultures, and purposes.  We hope to play songs that celebrate those histories, while having a great time playing together and with our audiences.  Some styles will include:
