Experimental Telecom Services

Regarding the research on experimental telecom services, the GIGA Project in the second phase will develop a work named Experimental TV. The goal is to research and develop a complete solution for TV multimedia content distribution, storage and access, using a multi-service access platform and IP transport layer for broadcasting, which offers additional telecom and e-government services.

In this case, the developments aim at providing the following benefits:

Social
  • The definition of interactive digital content storage and search mechanisms enables the creation of user-accessible, integrated repositories accessible to users, building a library that will enable both cultural preservation and dissemination.
  • The potential for the creation of a programming grid for a specific community and the creation and diffusion of local content promotes the full integration of individuals able to play roles as consumers and producers of information, strengthening their local cultural identity, traditions, creeds and values.

Technological
  • Terminal convergence, where IPTV and broadcast users can benefit from the same content.
  • Network convergence, which creates mechanisms to access services and applications, enabling support to different business models.
  • Service convergence, which enables the delivery of different types of media: voice, data and video through different types of terminal.

Market
  • The solution, particularly regarding digital content sharing, serves the interests of players as government, educational, regional and community TVs.
