Meeting Minutes

1/24/10 Meeting

posted Jan 27, 2010 11:02 AM by Dayna LaPlante

Project Suyana Organization?

            - Let’s call ourselves a student group….

Fundraising Ideas

-       no DA: Ken, Dayna, and Erin made a somewhat executive decision that the DA just wouldn’t be possible this year given our small group size

o      also the nature and what the DA has become doesn’t necessarily reflect our group goals

Meeting Time

-       Let’s use the meeting time more productively, ie. actually research during meetings, etc.

-       Realistically we just don’t have the time in our busy lives to be doing all of this outside work and bringing it to meetings

Tyler’s in Peru

-       Went to Old Folk’s home

o      Clearing land and planting food, repairing chicken coop

o      Also need basic things like rice, etc.

o      Needs $$$ to fund this- Dayna will contact Tyler about this

§       Voted to give him the $100 needed (from the TCF account)

§       We’ll see if we can apply for funding

-       Trip info: Housing in an apt or at the University??

-       Stoves: Dr. Ivan said that there’s some type of NGO doing this, he’ll get back with the name…

-    Ask Tyler:

-       What NGO was working there installing stoves? Could we collaborate with them?

-       Can you take a picture of the burning stove at the Old Folk’s home?

-       Do they use their stoves for heat? What is used for fuel?

Pat’s Stove Presentation

-       Goals from Fall09

o      Test for reduction; change of scale for stove size, modify/optimize design; cooking level

o      Pat’s group chose to focus on “test for reduction” of household pollutants

- Testing:

o      Set up a room with the stove and testing meters

o      Tested for CO (most important for health) and CO2 levels (to use as a gauge for other pollutants), and also NO2, SO2 and O2

§       However data failed in some cases because the monitors malfunctioned

§       CO reduced by 80% and CO2 reduced by 70%

o      The real question is what went wrong? What could we change?

§       Air is less dense in general in puno…

§       If they vary fuels results can change (ie. plastic?)

§       If there are multiple stoves the airflow they generate may push the pollution into the next stove and get dirtier… etc.

§       *The heat gets pushed out of the stove* and the area isn’t as warm compared to an open fire

§       IMPLEMENTATION!

11/18 Meeting

Erin's Trip Talk

- When: The trip starts usually right after spring semester (end of june to end of july)
- Where: We stay in a hostel within walking distance of the tourist area in Puno.
- Costs: The hostel roughly costs about $10 a night so its about $300 for our stay. Food costs are as cheap/expensive as you want but in general it's much cheaper than eating out in the US.
- What: Everyday we go to the Puno Regional hospital to shadow Drs in the morning (8am-12pm). This time is used for personal learning, to form relationships with the staff/community, and to learn about the healthcare system in Puno. So far we've made a lot of contacts from the shadowing we've done in the hospital, for example Dr. Ivan. Through Dr. Ivan we also learn and work with the med-students. Last year we went to an orphanage and the old folks home as well.

- Other: APEPCO is the student journalist/advocacy group we met.

What now? Establish and work on our own projects. Work with other groups already there.

Tyler's Plan
- Going to Peru in January to scope out the Old Folk's home for a few weeks, then he is going to the countryside to hang.

Date Auction
- things for next week: ways to enhance the DA
        - better experience
        - AUCTIONEES

posted Nov 8, 2009 2:41 PM by Tyler Cole

Called with phone card

How we called: Entered phone card info, 011(international) + 51 (Peru) + 51 (Puno)
Here's the info in case we're not Skyping with him:

It's pretty simple:
  1.  Call this number: 1-800-922-6517
  2. Enter in the pin: 91-1846-8842
  3. Dial the number you want to call: (011)-(country code)-(local area code)-(number)
...and hope it somehow works.  Although I think we did get it to work once.  So just do it again.

Hope that helps, email/text/call me if there are problems.

- Adnan

Notes from the discussion
  • Talked about us coming to peru, confirmed, and wanted to know when we were coming down. We said all of June and all of July for sure. Hopefully mid may to mid august.
  • ACEM UNA has meetings Monday nights to talk about all the projects that they want to do and how to help us with ours. They are scoping out places and ideas for us. He is very open to any of our own projects, and also to us helping out with their projects. We will need to focus on some programs that we can go about ourselves since our trip falls in the middle of their school year.
  • Hes going to send us photos of the projects that they do each year. They are preparing to help out La Rinconnada, where they go each month. There is a shack that they work out of with one doctor and they travel and help with medical treatment. They are really trying to start up a clinic for the students so that they would have a constant place to visit and work out of.
  • Emphasized that they will do a lot of the planning for us, continuing to work on that during their Monday meetings. He has all of our projects in front of him and is willing to work with us on anything.
  • Has a place for Tyler to stay. Rural area.
  • He's going to start documenting their projects and send us outlines and information on them. From this we can will have a place to start with our marketing ideas.

Images of rural community outreach programs sent from Dr. Ivan.

Michelle, Horoko, Andrea Duffey, Shaza, Sara Fort, Pat, Erin Wiley, Dayna LaPlante, Tyler Cole, Catherine M, Abbas, Ali attended the meeting.

Erin gave a short powerpoint presentation of the old folk's home that they found in the summer.
- Here are some key points:
        - It's cold. They need clothing.
        - They have land for crop growing when possible, but they need food.
        - They seemed lonely.
        - It's located in a tourist area because Chiquito is an old town.
        - Dr. Ivan is in contact with the home.
- We think that they get their supplies from donations. Ask Dr. Ivan?
- Some ideas:
        - Yarn: knitting. This is an activity that they can do and it can provide them with blankets as well. The markets have yarn, obviously.

Horoko brought up a group that she found called Pro-World. http://www.myproworld.org/locations/peru.htm  She talking to them this week and will update us tomorrow.
