If we have enough students, some will not need to have both to perform and to do technical work, but if not, everyone will need to double up, so get your friends into the class too! If you'd like to be in charge of set design, costume design, or such, and there's competition, you might need to show me how you can handle the work.  People who join the class after week 2 will be less likely to get big parts or jobs to do for the drama, so sign up before the end of the drop/add period, please.

Please get Celtx and then upload a blank project to their Project Central; send me your username so I can add you to the list so you can download the play file and also view it online. Here are the instructions in Chinese:

2 9/22 HOMEWORK DUE TODAY: Auditions.  Classroom: DH321 Before today's class, go to this page and fill out the survey; it will help me to be ready for today and to make good choices as to who does what in the play. The form service I use was full, so I had to move the survey to a "word" document instead; please copy the text and paste it into a blank Word document; fill it out in Word and save it and then email it to me--use your student number and English first name as the file name. Thank you!!  To prepare for auditions, see this page. The audition material for people who are not sure what character they'd prefer is all ready at the top of the page. Also,  to see which characters appear in what scenes and songs, please consult this table.  ALSO:  Join the drama class at Studeous.  I further encourage you to subscribe to the Crystal Blog and get regular updates from it.  Further, don't forget to get Celtx and give me your username for Project Central (see above).
IN CLASS TODAY: Auditions! Please be ready--use the material on this page to prepare yourselves for the chants of a lifetime.

4 10/6

HOMEWORK DUE TODAY:  Find the listings for characters and technical people at this page. (It will be ready, I hope and expect, about  10/3--the actors and singers, at least!). Technical leaders and dancing, singing, and dialog directors, please start up your clubs at Studeous and get your  members to join them. I've started some clubs at Studeous already: Actors; Singers; Musical Instrumentalists; Technical Stars. I will transfer leadership of these clubs to you if you're the new leader; within "technical" there are specific categories, and if you're the leader of props, costumes, etc. you can establish a club for your people to coordinate them.
If you have a backstage job, get Celtx and get the script, and find all your stuff in it. Make a list of what you should do, or highlight the script to indicate your parts. I've listed various lights, curtains, makeup, props, sets, etc. but you will probably find more or have your own ideas. Please begin now! There is much to do and no need for anyone to simply come to class and wait for anything. Get your own part ready and don't worry about others. Wayne Wang is in charge of making sure the backstage people are doing their jobs; he's the Assistant Director.
All performers need their scripts and Celtx too. Get familiar with the music and dialogue for Act I Scenes 1 and 3 and be ready to practice on Monday! The latest version of the script for Act I is here--Copies should be available for you from me at rehearsals, but you can start working with this version.
IN CLASS TODAY: Cast announcements.   Act I scenes 1, 3.  Both dialogue and the  songs: "Thinking of Learning"
and "Gypsies Are. . ." (Act I scene 1) and "New Class Clown" (Act I Scene 3). I'll post MP3s at Studeous as "podcasts." The PDFs for both songs are given in Celtx under "Vocal Scores." Please use the latest available script at all times; check Celtx weekly to make sure your script is current.  Please start learning the songs and your lines. Today, also, Stanley and Oliver will practice their dialogue at the beginning of Act II scene 4.

MORE HOMEWORK DUE TODAY: Technical leaders' proposals for their work due today in first draft form.

5 10/13 HOMEWORK DUE TODAY: All chorus and actors' roles are now listed here. Please keep up to date on Celtx, send me your usernames if you haven't done so yet, and keep up to date with the script; I hope to have Act III complete before today. Also I am making cuts for Crystal and Lucinda in Act I Scene 2, and will post them very soon. Please get the script and keep current, and start learning your lines and music. Chorus members, I have fixed the songs and given you the music in the "Scores" in Celtx.
IN CLASS TODAY:Review of Act I scenes 1 and 3. Act II scenes 1 and 4, "Fame and Fortunes" and "International Day." I will work with soloists and chorus today.  I plan to record my voice on all chorus parts for you, whenever I can find time. I'll do what I can; please you do what you can, too. Actors Lucinda, Crystal, and Oliver should have private practices to work on Act I Scene 2 and Act II Scenes 2 and 3, which are just for these three characters.
6 10/20 HOMEWORK DUE TODAY: Singers, I am beginning to record all your parts myself and post them here. Please go here and listen; learn your parts, please. If your part is not there, it will be soon!  Also, I now have the whole script HERE in a full draft for you to print.   ALSO: Singers, we will begin weekly vocal rehearsals on Tuesdays at 3:00-5:00 PM: Tomorrow, October 21st. Meet at my office (DH213). These will be extra practices in addition to the Monday class times. Dancers, please attend the acting/singing rehearsal today. NOTICE: The vocal scores for the first 4 songs of the play have been updated in Celtx. Please get them if you're a singer.
IN CLASS TODAY: Act II scene 4; Act III.
今天上課進度:第二幕的第四景以及第三幕
7 10/27 HOMEWORK DUE TODAY:  Actors should have AT LEAST half of their own lines memorized by now; Crystal and Lucinda should have at least their biggest scene (with the most lines) memorized today. Singers should have memorized at least the first 3 songs you sing by today too.
I need reports from the backstage heads! What have you done so far? What is there still to do? Do you need support? I need the lists from you today (as mentioned already in class) so I can post it for the whole class to share!
Time is moving fast. You must have all your lines memorized by next week!
IN CLASS TODAY: Work on the actors and the music they sing. Reading through Act III.

8 11/3 ALL SINGERS: We now have two weekly extra musical practices--each week until further notice! They are: Tuesdays 3-5 PM in DH 213, and Sunday nights 8 PM till 10 PM at the Student Center Rm 248. This Tuesday I will work with character soloists from 3-4 PM and with the chorus from 4-5. HOMEWORK DUE TODAY:  Actors should have all their lines memorized today! All students and singers should learn "Gypsies Are" (their parts) for a test today. All your own singing parts that I've provided at the "parts" page should be learned for today too. Also, every chorus member will have at least one solo to sing--mostly little ones. Please look through the list and see which TWO you want to do. I won't promise to give you the one you picked but I need to have you think about it.. Here  is the  list of the small solos that will be chosen today.
IN CLASS TODAY: We will practice the lines from memory, and practice all songs that are available. Student soloists and actors should be familiar with their own music. Use the Parts Page and the MP3s I recorded there to learn your parts, and then you may use the MP3s at the Studeous "podcast" area to practice with the instruments.

IN CLASS TODAY:
Review of songs for the chorus.
10 11/17 HOMEWORK DUE TODAY: Singers, the song "Thinking of Learning" is now in a lower key; the mp3s and the score in Celtx are already fixed. Get them and learn them, please. Student characters, you need to keep up with learning both your lines and the songs. I sent a message to you all in Studeous on 11/12. Please read and understand it. All singers, including both student characters and the chorus: please consider our Tuesday and Sunday practices as required. I will call roll and skipping will hurt your grade. Let me know if you will not be able to come--and have a good reason why not!  The Reprises song is now ready for vocal learning. All songs and all parts now posted with working links at the Parts Page. The Celtx project now has all vocal parts as PDFs and all recent MIDI files. Please download SynthFont for free and use it to play any voice or instrument you want, or turn it off. Here is the direct download link. You can also change instruments or make MP3s. Not necessary if you don't sing or play in the band. For the Mid-term assignment, please give a report on your own progress and work for the drama, evaluating also either the people on your team (if you are a team leader) or the leader if you are not him or her. What jobs are you specifically working on? Are you working hard? Are you fully prepared? If not, what have you still got left to do? Please give yourself and your team/leader a number score between 70 and 95--70 being a bad grade and 95 being terrific. If you have any more specific feedback or comments or suggestions, please add them to your paper or just leave a comment at my guest book. Also, you should all review the script and understand the story; I will soon post an online test on it for the other part of the Mid  Term grade.  ALSO, all backstage and onstage heads, prepare an interesting feature post for our online blog. Use English if you can, and also Chinese. Include photos or other media to show the public and the class what you and your people have been doing. Today in class we will decide the order of posts and the deadlines. Expect about 3-4 posts a week, each time from a different team.
IN CLASS TODAY: We will run scenes from memory and rehearse the blocking (moving on stage). We will practice the songs in their correct places in the story. The singing actors will work for the first hour or so with me on their solo and group singing...today and most other Monday classes until the show. Tuesdays 3-4 are also already devoted to solo singers and student characters who sing.  All performers OFF BOOK by today; that means that you can't look at your script or music anymore: you must learn it by heart!
11 11/24 HOMEWORK DUE TODAY: Program full draft and poster full draft due today. Last rehearsal before we start in the theater.
IN CLASS TODAY: Attempt to run the show from start to finish. . .
12 12/1 On Sunday, 11/30, we will run Heroine, I Need to Talk to You, and New Class Clown with the band, 7-9 PM. 17 1/5 HOMEWORK DUE TODAY:
IN CLASS TODAY:
NO CLASS SESSION TODAY!! TAKE A REST~~ You deserve it!!   Please remember we'll have lunch on this coming Monday at 11 AM at the Bullfight restaurant.  Also, singers from the chorus are supposed to come today for a singing quiz. Sopranos at 9 and Altos at 10. Strangely, though, it's 9:30 and nobody has shown up yet!  UPDATE: it's now 10:44 and STILL nobody has shown up, so I'll go to the restaurant now. . .
18 1/12 HOMEWORK DUE TODAY: The show is done but there is still some work left to do.
For the last Monday of the semester: Reports on what you did for the show in writing, as requested months ago for the mid-terms but nobody really did it! Please see the above notes for the mid term to know what to do. Report on your own work and evaluate your team leader (if it wasn't you) or on your team members (if you were the leader yourself). Please give a number grade with 90-100 being an A, 80-89 being a B, 70-79 being a C, 60-69 being a D (for passing, but not good), and anything 59 and under being "failing". Actors please report on the acting coach; chorus members please evaluate yourself as a singer.  Please either send (by email) or give me (on a CD-ROM or DVD) a copy of what you did for the show if suitable--such as the pre-show movie (Iris), the files for the program and poster etc. (Thai), the DVD of the performance, photos of the costumes, or what have you. This is for your grade but also for paperwork for the play as well as a historical record.  Thanks Debbie for sending the PPT files.                          It's too bad that so many didn't do the mid-term assignment, but please don't neglect the final assignment, everybody!
IN CLASS TODAY: Viewing the movie version of Crystal
(assuming it's ready).  Also, since nobody showed up last time, singers from the chorus need to come today for a singing quiz. Sopranos at 8 and Altos at 9.  Then we'll watch the movie.
