Teaching

My Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that education is based on the sharing of knowledge, experiences, and resources through various pedagogical activities that emphasize both conceptual material and the application of this material. That is, I view teaching as an ongoing process and am continually implementing new methods (and altering less successful ones).

While it is my over-arching goal for students to recall and correctly apply substantive course content, another goal is to facilitate learning.  I attempt to create a dynamic learning atmosphere where my own learning and experiences coalesce with students’ informed knowledge and experiences.  Education is most effective when it is guided by an open and democratic philosophy where knowledge and experiences can be shared; where education is viewed as a cooperative enterprise; and when the student is allowed to actively contribute.

Towards that end, I strive to create a supportive environment, making students feel welcomed and respected. While I do have office hours that I encourage students to meet with me, I am always willing to respond to emails and/or to set up a mutually convenient appointment.  Get in touch with me to discuss course content, graduate school, future career choices or ???: jhartman@uncc.edu.
