Bienvenidos, mi clase es tu clase.
The key to success in my class is participation in and completion of all of the activities covered for each chapter. Bring your textbook and both workbooks along with your Spanish notebook to class every time we meet.I use the Study Spanish web site to review and reinforce the grammar we are currently studying. Assignments are posted on the syllabus under the "all assignments" drop down tab. Check this often and begin each assignment with the oral quiz 1 before completing the assigned exercize.
Overall Course Schedule Spanish II 2010-2011 Sr. Rose
Buen Viaje Level II (Textbook & Workbook) [Glencoe/McGraw Hill publishing copy write 2003]
1st 9 weeks Most of the period (5 ½ to 7 weeks) will be spent reviewing 1st year Spanish. The text is broken up in 7 mini-chapters (5 to 7 pages) called Repasos. Each Repaso A-G offers an opportunity to review both vocabulary and grammar in order to refresh each student, and present me with the needed feedback to present additional activities where appropriate.
During this time, the goal is not to re-teach for mastery, but rather to refresh the students’ understanding of basic Spanish communication from level I.
The first nine weeks will end during or after we have completed Chapter 1 of the regular part of the text.
2nd 9 weeks During this nine weeks we will complete Chapters 2 through Chapter 6/7. Each chapter will from 6 to 9 days to complete. Each chapter will include several quizzes on vocabulary and grammar as well as graded written activities. A large chapter test will also accompany each chapter.
The focus of this nine weeks is the formation and use of the past tenses; Preterite and Imperfect.
Formation of the preterite past tense was begun in Spanish I. Although other grammatical concepts will immerge, using both tenses to adequately express the past will overwhelmingly be the theme as we finish the 1st semester. Hence it will dominate the mid-term exam.
3rd 9 weeks During this nine weeks, we will complete Chapters 7/8 through Chapters 11/12. A variety of intermediate concepts will be explored with the same pacing as the previous chapters. The National Spanish Exam will highlight the end of this nine weeks.
4th 9 weeks During this nine weeks we will complete the textbook material from Chapter 11 or 12 through Chapter 14. The focus of these last 4 chapters will be the uses of the present tenses subjunctive.
This move back to the present tense will represent an extremely common practice in Spanish of using subjunctive which has all but disappeared in English. As time allows we will change as many of the subjunctive aspects as we have learned to the past tense.
The final exam will overwhelmingly focus on the use of the subjunctive mood in Spanish.
