MAISA Fall Women's @ Navy, 11/8-9- Michelle Arader '10 This weekend Kate Costello '12, Eleanor Elbert '12, Amanda Rees '12 and I traveled to Annapolis, MD, for the MAISA Women's Dinghy Open. We were welcomed by our gracious hosts Alison and Sterge Papadakis ('97 and '94 respectively), two of our own Princeton Sailing alumni. It was great to hear about their time on the team, and to meet their beautiful baby daughter. Rene joined us on Saturday morning at the sailing site at the Naval Academy. Saturday morning started with rain and very little wind, but after some down time in Navy's sailing viewing center, we managed to get four races off. Eleanor skippered- for the first time- in B division, with Amanda crewing- for the first time. Kate skippered and Michelle crewed in A division. We had mixed results but all adjusted to new conditions and came back Sunday ready to take on the fierce competition. Sunday was more productive: between 9:45 and 4:00, each fleet completed 9 races. We didn't come off the water until our fingers were frozen and the sun was setting, but our spirits were high. Again, results were mixed, but Kate and Michelle finished in the top ten almost every race, and had a few top-five finishes. Eleanor and Amanda gradually began to apply skills they had been learning in practice and steadily improved in their races throughout the day. This regatta was a great opportunity for all of us to get a better taste of collegiate sailing, against some experienced sailors. Official Results: MAISA WOMEN'S NAVAL ACADEMY NOVEMBER 8-9 2008 FINAL RESULTS REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS: On Saturday morning rain greeted competitors as a front moved through. A light westerly filled as the front passed and the boats launched at 1130, unfortunately the breeze died before we could get any racing off. The teams waited ashore until a southerly filled in. 4 races were run in 5-8 kts of breeze, courses were windward leeward twice around, with leeward gates. Sunday started with a shifty westerly from 5-12 kts and slowly died as The southerly sea breeze pushed in. Once the southerly filled, the course was reset and racing finished in 5-8 kts. Thanks to Herb Larrabee for umpiring on the water and the Midshipmen for getting off 12 races in challenging conditions. One protest was heard and disallowed there were no requests for redress and no breakdowns. Congratulations to St Marys, Georgetown, ODU, HWS, Navy, UPenn, Fordham and WAC for qualifying for ACCs next weekend. Syracuse was a no show. A division = 12 Races B division = 12 Races A B TOT 1.
