War Memorial Regatta @ Cornell, 11/1-2- Allison Tracy '10 Having heard reports of snow in Ithaca earlier in the week, it was a skeptical group of sailors that drove up to Cornell for the War Memorial. We saw large snow drifts in many places throughout New York, but luckily not at our final destination. We drove up Halloween night, which was certainly an interesting experience since we were taking dark and windy back roads through the middle of nowhere... but we persevered. Although we were disappointed to learn that the glamorous new boathouse was not yet open, the conditions on Saturday were ideal and both fleets completed three of four sets. I sailed A-Division with Matthew Tilghman, '09, and Brandon Racusin '09 sailed B-Division with John Wetenhall, '11. The wind was north, coming down Lake Cayuga at 10-15 knots, and the races were close and competitive. Matt and I had several good finishes and we had a great dialogue going in the boat that helped us figure out a lot of the tricky parts of the races. Both teams found the starts challenging and it was valuable to be able to work on our timing and acceleration in the context of a highly competitive regatta. There were only two races on Sunday after a long wind delay during which A Division sat on the water for almost 2 hours without starting a race. The wind was West, coming over the hills, which made it unreliable and patchy until it shifted more southerly. Each fleet got off two races in the end, and the course was quite interesting. The southerly wind comes over the land because Ithaca is at the southern end of Lake Cayuga, so we were dealing with some extreme shifts. At one point Matt and I found a thirty degree lift coming into the port layline. This left shift seemed to be pretty consistent, but the bad news was that it completely stratified the fleet. You can see from our two finishes on Sunday (6 and 16) that you either got it or you didn't. It seemed kind of unbelievable to me that it would be this reliable, so I tried going out right the second race and learned my lesson. Brandon and John felt like they clicked much better on Sunday and we only wished that there were more races. Brandon, Matt and I stayed with the Turnbulls, who live only a few miles down the lake, and they were wonderful hosts. There was lots of Halloween candy to go around and we learned a lot about the Cornell sailing program. I've gotten to know a few of the sailors at regattas over the years and we've talked a bunch about how to recruit sailors, manage commitment and generally improve the intensity on a club team. The weekend was a lot of fun, and we successfully qualified for Atlantic Coast Tournament at Harvard next weekend. If anyone is in the area feel free to drop by!
