Navy Fall Women's Intersectional @ Navy, 10/11-12- Whitney Davis '09, Natacha Jamar '09, Allison Tracy '10 This past weekend the Princeton women’s sailing team journeyed down to Annapolis, MD, to take on the top 17 teams in the country- maybe in the world! The competition was quite fierce, and very blonde. Whitney Davis ’09 skippered A Division with Natacha Jamar ’09 as her crew. They had the good luck of sailing in 420s the entire weekend since we didn’t have enough races to switch. Although they had an off day on Saturday, Whitney and Natacha pulled through on Sunday with an average of 4th, beating out the national champions, Boston College. Allison Tracy ’10 skippered B Division on Saturday with Mary Gamber ’11 and they managed to pull off two top-ten finishes in four races. On Sunday, Mary skippered with Jackie Temkin ’09 and they fought against patchy wind and lots of chop in the river. Kate “pure domination” Costello ’12, the Princeton laser sailing team, sailed a laser radial on both Saturday and Sunday. As the name suggests, she dominated on the second race, coming behind only four sailors, including the women’s collegiate laser champion. The facilities at the Naval Academy were amazing and it was partially due to the fact that they have three full fleets of FJs, 420s and lasers that we were able to get off a total of 15 races in only a few hours of sailing. Although the conditions were less than perfect, we enjoyed catching up with friends and competing against such high caliber sailors. The climax of the regatta was our chance encounter with Nick Burroughs, '08, a new resident of Baltimore. All six of us stayed with the hospitable family of Joe Wood, ‘67. We spent both Friday and Saturday night watching Disney movies from their impressive collection, and they made two wonderful breakfasts for us. They also made a generous contribution to our new team library: a signed copy of Gary Jobson’s book. Some of you may remember that we attended a women’s regatta last spring at St. Mary’s. Although that was a very competitive event, it paled in comparison to Navy Fall Women’s, which is basically a preview of Nationals. Stanford and USF both traveled to Navy for the regatta, underscoring the significance of the event. Sailing at Navy Women’s was a major accomplishment for us and we met the challenge enthusiastically. Official Results: Navy Fall Women's Intersectional Navy 11-12 Oct. REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS: Saturday started light and did not allow for much racing. Four races in all divisions were sailed on a trapezoid off of the Naval Academy seawall in a light and shifty NE breeze. The breeze lightened as noon approached and the fleet came in for lunch. The afternoon saw the fleet launch into the same light northeasterly and coaches were sent on the water in support boats to allow coaching on a better course further out, but the wind did not cooperate. After waiting with no breeze until 3 o'clock racing was called for the day. One protest was heard resulting in one DSQ. Sunday started with a light northwesterly that died before any races could be started. An easterly tried to fill but remained light and the teams waited on shore. We launched for the first race at 1230 and got one race off before the easterly died out. The teams waited until 2:45 to see if any breeze would fill in to no avail. A total of four yellow flags were imposed by our judges, one protest was heard resulting in a DSG and there was one RAF. Thank you to our PRO Eric Reinke and his Midshipmen who dealt with trying conditions and our Judges Dick Morin, Maureen Mills, and Pat Healy.
