Philly Fleet Race @ UPenn, 10/4-5- Mary Gamber '11
This past weekend Michelle Arader ’10, Eric Domb ’10, Esteban Plaza-Jennings ’11, Virginia Maloney ’10 and I traveled to Corinthian Yacht Club on the Delaware River to sail in the Philly Fleet Race. The weekend was sunny and warm but unfortunately not very conducive to sailing. The light and shifty wind made it very difficult to sail against the strong current. At times the entire fleet was unable to move forward, causing race 5A to be abandoned and the regatta to end early Sunday afternoon. However, we managed to prevail against the conditions and finish the regatta in second place.

Mary and Virginia sailed A division while Eric skippered B division with Michelle on Saturday and Esteban on Sunday. Both A and B division had some impressive finishes, including two firsts for Mary and Virginia and a second and third for Eric and Esteban. The shifty and light conditions gave us great roll tacking practice and showed us the importance of tacking on to lifts and playing the shifts. The fleet was small with only eights teams and we all spent a lot of time getting to know each other during the long waits for the wind to fill.

Despite only sailing four races for each division we all had a great weekend and enjoyed the regatta!

REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:
Saturday:  Very light winds on the Delaware River where it was very
difficult to have a race in which boats were not swept away by the current.
3 races total were sailed and the day ended early due to lack of wind.
Sunday:   Better wind, topping out at about 5 knots. 5 races total were
sailed, all  windward leeward courses once around. Current was a major
issue, boat had difficulty making it to the line in time for the start, but
all in all it was a successful day of sailing. Thank you to the Columbia
Coach and Congrats to Monmoath.
