Hood Trophy @ Tufts, 9/27-28- Allison Tracy '10 Our Hood Trophy adventure began the week before the regatta as we contemplated the infamous Larks. We practiced in the FJs in our respective pairs, but I knew that we would have to do some quick adjusting once we got out on the water at Tufts. The Tufts sailing site is located on the Mystic Lakes in Winchester, MA, and the conditions are notoriously tricky. Unfortunately, the passing storms out on the ocean never hit us and we had wind delays until noon both days. I sailed A Division with Natacha Jamar '09 and Jack Marzulli '12 skippered B Division with Eleanor Elbert '12. It was great to have freshmen enthusiastic enough to make their debut in college sailing at an Intersectional, and a particularly difficult one at that, but they took on the challenge. It's really a shame that we only had three races in each division because Natacha and I really enjoyed the larks, so much so that we spent some extra time practicing roll tacks when they sent us in after a failed attempt at racing Sunday afternoon. Natacha also went out with Jack for some instructional help during the wind delay, and I fit in some short practice with Eleanor at the very end of the day on Sunday. We were able to have a great conversation among the four of us that helped us all think about ways to improve. As we started the car ride home Eleanor said, not at all sarcastically, how excited she was to start practicing roll tacks at Raritan. There is nothing like an Intersectional with top sailing schools to demonstrate how important basic kinetics are. Often times we can let a few bad roll tacks slide, but not at Tufts. We didn't end up doing so well in the regatta itself, but my only regret is that we didn't have more time to figure out the puzzle of the Mystic lakes and work on our boat speed in comparison to some of the top sailors in the collegiate world. It really is an opportunity to do that, and we all enjoyed the time we spent sailing. Our experiences off the water were a little less satisfying, as we managed to get lost several times, including in the middle of the night in Winchester- they don't have street signs. It was great to stay with the Marshall family, as well, and they had their own regatta activities going on with their three young opti sailors. Our new coach Rene accompanied us for this regatta and it was great to have him to facilitate the discussion of shifts and conditions between the two fleets. It was also good for him to get a taste of Tufts as he hadn't encountered much in regards to the Mystic Lakes. We enjoyed ourselves in general and spent a lot of time bonding with the freshmen in those wind delays, so the regatta was a success for me. Now that I've been to Tufts twice I realize that going up to Boston for the weekend is no longer just a long haul. If I can make it next year I will definitely go to rehash the battle with the Mystic Lakes! Official Results: HOOD TROPHY REGATTA TUFTS UNIVERSITY Sept. 27-28, 2008 FINAL RESULTS PRO: Ken Legler Highlights: Saturday: 24 teams showed up to beautiful Mystic Lake to find little breeze and moderate rain. By the end of the day, 3 A-division and 2 B-division races were sailed in a 2-4 knot northerly. No protests or breakdowns were filed. Thanks to the throng of Jumbo undergrads and alumni for helping and hanging out, and to everyone who braved the rain to watch the racing from the viewing deck. Sunday: The lake was glassy and rainy most of the day, though around 2:30pm a 2-5 knot northerly held long enough to get 1 B-division race off. Once again thanks to all for coming down, especially those of you with long drives home. Congrat’s to the Yale Bulldogs, who have now earned the title “most hood” until next fall.
