SUNY Maritime Fall Open, 9/20-21- Mary Gamber '11 This past weekend Eric Domb ’10, Esteban Plaza-Jennings ’11, Catie Bartlett ’12 and I headed down to SUNY Maritime for their Fall Open Regatta. 17 boats competed in this event, providing a very competitive fleet for our first weekend of fall racing. I skippered for Eric in A division and Esteban skippered for Catie in B division. On Saturday the wind was a very light northeasterly about 5-8 knots with an incredible current. The current was strongest during the first few races of the day and consistently pushed all the boats over the starting line, causing multiple general recalls. At one point the current was so strong that when Eric and I had to round the end after being over early at the start, the current going downwind back to the line overpowered our boatspeed and pushed us backwards up the course toward the windward mark. The strong current and very shifty wind made for some very interesting races. During races 5A and 6A there was a huge port lift on the right side of the course. Eric and I split from the fleet to sail far right and ended up passing all the boats that went left, to win the final race of the day! Esteban and Catie improved every set and had a sixth place in a very well-sailed race 5B. We all struggled to understand the current and wind shifts but it was definitely great practice for other unpredictable sailing sites. On Sunday the wind never filled and the racing was called at 1pm, allowing for an early return back to Princeton. We ended up earning 11th place overall, with Eric and I placing 6th in A division and Esteban and Catie placing 11th in B division. We would like to thank the Dombs for cooking a delicious dinner Saturday night and hosting us that evening, and we would also like to thank the Gambers for providing us with a delicious lunch both Saturday and Sunday. We had a great weekend and look forward to racing again soon!
