User Skill Set

The user should be able to start and shutdown a PC, surf the Internet using search engines, URLs, and know how to activate a hyperlinked word.  Install small programs, activate a *.exe file, save a document, create a folder, copy and delete files, use the desktop explorer, and plug in USB devices.  The user will need administrative access to the PC to download and install some of the files that will be used to test base-line security and files to upgrade the security protection if necessary.

User's Mind Set

Understand that accessing the Internet poses risks to one's PC hardware, software, data, and possibly a loss of one's electronic identity.  Ultimately, it is your sole responsibility to independently evaluate the security and protection levels of your computer.

A can do attitude.  Since you are already on the Internet you are facing the threats listed above, so you are interested in seeing what your security level is and improving your protection level.

You may want to use some of the security assessment tools that will be covered in this Primer without installing any software to your PC.  Maybe you are interested in knowing more about PC Security protection but are not interested in testing your PC.  What ever your interest, please do not do anything that is not comfortable for you.

 Equipment Required

  •  Broad Band Internet Access
  •  Windows 2000 Pro or Windows XP Pro
  •  More free hard drive free space than files downloaded (User must check before downloading)
  • Hopefully a firewall installed
  • Hopefully a virus scanner installed
  • Hardware to backup critical files, data and OS if user can not reinstall the OS (Operating System)

On to getting started.
