Random Thoughts

Following are some random thoughts I'd like to share with you.

A cleansing drink first thing in the morning is a great way to start your day! The recipe is below and includes some benefits and risks associated with it. Please read carefully and consider trying it once to see what you think.

A tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil per hour IF constipated may help relieve the situation. (Don't laugh! It's effective! ;)

Headaches are often times due to dehydration - drink cool to room temperature water slowly and continually to re-hydrate.

Some everyday foods that we all consume without a second thought - that are so insidiously bad for us... I now consider these products evil. These products are evil (or in more conventional terms, toxic) in that the harm they cause is so subtle and gradual one doesn't recognize it as harmful.  (so... the world according to me...I'm really not as crazy as all this sounds..., )
  • Soda is toxic. Drink water! Drink tea! Soda should be eliminated, purged, drained down the toilet!
  • Table salt is toxic and evil.  Use Sea Salt instead (pick the red or gray sea salt) and it tastes so much better!  I carry it in my purse for dinners out.
  • White sugar is toxic. Alternatives are stevia (an herb!), agave nectar, brown rice syrup - these are natural sweeteners that are lower in the glycemic index and do not cause the harm that white sugar does. If your goal includes loosing weight, wait before adding these to your diet... (Yup, stevia packets are also in my purse!)
  • Corn Syrup and High fructose corn syrup are pure evil - they should be banned from the planet! (and they are in so many processed products - so many)
  • Wheat (including whole wheat) is bad - for alot of people! Buckwheat, coconut, spelt, amaranth - non-gluten flours all work.
  • Alcohol is toxic too. Sorry :(  no, alternatives here...  What I can offer is that once you find yourself healthy - weight is where you want it, cholesterol levels are improved, you are just feeling so much better - you can allow yourself a drink or two, just not often... and I think because it's made from potatoes and not fermented, vodka is the prefered liquor!
  • And contrary to popular belief... We do not need milk! It contributes to lung, sinus, throat and allergy issues.  Almond milk is a wonderful alternative!

Speaking of almonds... Eating a handful of almonds daily is great for your heart, for your cholesterol levels. Buy raw almonds... if you want them salted or sweetened, make it at home!  Salted: toast in skillet w/ olive oil and sea salt! Sweetened: toast in skillet w/ coconut oil and and agave nectar, cinnamon. Raw sunflower seeds are also very easy to make salty at home (can add to yogurt, salads or just munch!)  We make a yummy "sweet nuts." Combine several kinds of raw nuts (crushing some, leaving some whole) and toast in coconut oil/unsalted butter, add agave nectar, brown rice syrup, vanilla, pumpkin pie spice and cinnamon, flavored stevia - it's so good! but keeps the inches from melting away...

Finding an easy complete gluten free food list is not easy. Below is a simple but high level list. Also linked below is a pdf that you can print and place on your fridge, as it's a 'yeast-free' list it's mostly glutenfree.  It's a helpful reminder of what you can/ can not eat. At first I had put the red list up and focused on what I could not eat. Now I just put the green and orange lists on my fridge. Maybe it's a mindset, but I think it's more helpful to focus on what I can eat rather than what I can't...   The list is located here: http://www.wholeapproach.com/diet/WholeApproach_Food_List.pdf

Recipe: Shelley's Cleansing Drink / source: http://www.askshelley.com/faq.php?p=default&cat=56#a32
Appropriate for any stage, this drink is therapeutic during the cleansing stage and helps to increase digestive power; increases alkalinity, circulation; flushes the liver and kidneys; reduces mucus; cures acne, sore throat, gallbladder distress, acid reflux, body odor, high cholesterol, arthritis, food poisoning. It may be used as a meal replacement.
8-12 oz of water, may be warm. Vary amount of water according to taste and whether you've met your goal of ounces for the day.
Juice of 1/2 lemon
grated peel too if organic
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar or 1 tablespoon if 12 ounces or more
1 tsp grade B maple syrup or other natural sweetener to taste - (I use peppermint stevia to sweeten)
4-5 drops cayenne pepper tincture (assuming 10,000 heat units)
An important note on the Apple Cider Vinegar:
You can use regular store-bought ACV and still get benefits, but if you really want to aid your bowel flora and experience the full realm of health benefits you must get raw, unpastuerized ACV that still has "the mother" (sediment). This ACV looks cloudy because it has microbes alive and well in it, so it's like drinking Kefir. These are friendly flora, no need to get the heebie jeebies! :) You should be able to find this at a health foods store, and the label may even say "with the mother!" on it to reduce confusion as to whether it's the right one. If it's cloudy, it's the right one. Bragg’s and Spectrum has the right kind.
ACV has been used for centuries for all manner of illnesses. Be aware, though, that it will take enamel off of teeth, so drink this drink fast or with a straw, and you might want to rinse your mouth with baking soda afterwards. I simply dilute the ACV by using the maximum amount of water.
For more info on ACV, visit this page:
Contra-indications for this drink:   Please read carefully!
Some people cannot handle a lot of lemon juice. They don't handle citrus acids well and may get cankor sores or sore tongue. Discontinue use in that case.
Lemon juice causes the liver and gallbladder to cleanse and sometimes contract. If you overdose on the cleansing drink, say, 3 lemons a day or more, the lemon juice could tire/weaken the gallbladder or spleen. If you have a tendency to gallbladder attack pain, this drink may bring that on (nausea, burning pain, referred pain to shoulders).
Maple syrup is contra-indicated for stage-one candida people. Grade B is mineral rich. Molasses will give you plenty of minerals, including Iron, and is safer for candida/hypoglycemic/adult-onset diabetes people.
ACV is loaded with potassium; if you have impaired kidneys, you should monitor potassium intake and stick to low-potassium foods.
Cayenne pepper should not be taken for more than 30 days in a row.
