The Varieties of Fake Primal Therapy

YELLING PRACTICE

When Primal Therapy is thought to be understood simply by knowing the title of Janov's first book, The Primal Scream.  The participants definition of Primal is somewhat correct "      "  However, compare what ensues to the videos of the real thing on this site with Mary Lynn And SillyMickel Adzema.

I like to call this:  Yelling Practice  (there's absolutely no therapy involved)

Now, this would be funny if people thought that this was a caricature or spoof of Primal Therapy. The comments to this clip over at YouTube indicate that not only do the participants think they are actually doing something therapeutic, but others do too. One commenter actually goes into great detail to describe the elaborate methods he has developed for doing his "primal scream therapy," in all seriousness.

I am including the comments here, so the extent of the ignorance about Primal Therapy -- for which Arthur Janov himself, with his decisions to withhold true primal information, has to be ultimately accountable -- can be shown. You will see I am not exaggerating about the degree of caricature. And perhaps you will understand my dismay at the kind of primal session depicted in the videos presented by Mary Lynn is virtually unknown in the face of the onslaught of the faux primal therapies and the faux primal therapists without a clue.

These comments are in order of first comments to the most recent, as of 10/04/09. The video above was put out by "pstfreak," so the first comment shows that while they were trying to be humorous in the video they did actually think they were doing a "therapy"! This is made clear in his comments below "that screaming stuff actually works" and "the scream therapy releases endorphins and tension." By the way, I am in no way trying to mock or disparage these people, I think they sincerely were trying to help themselves and help others by making the video. And it is not their fault that an entire culture of misinformation about primal therapy grew up from the negligence of Arthur Janov, which they had no alternative but to believe. Indeed, the tragedy is that these are folks who are looking for some way to release tensions and it is likely that, because of Janov's actions, they will never get the real thing, which would have transformed their lives.

Thanks a bunch for the comment. I am glad we could humor you. That makes me feel good. Yeah, that screaming stuff actually works....well we were just acting crazy right there (cutting up lightens things up a bit also)...but the scream therapy releases endorphins and tension. Well, thanks again. I hope that you have an awesome day. God bless you!

abreaction makes you sicker

SMA:  Note in the above that the commenter thinks that "abreaction" - which is an earlier term for the emotional release that occurs in Primal -- was actually occurring in the video! Astonishing!

I try to keep a sober, neutral, or positive mind when I practice screaming, I like to practice screaming when Im not upset, or angry, Ill scream positive things and I also do sing/scream anbd try to make the sing scream chant sound good,
Its good to scream to a metrenome and work on dynamics, soft to loud, controlling texture, and trying to becreative and intuitive with it.

try screaming but practice being sober headed even if it makes you laugh and act silly, try screaming and chanting with seriousness of purpose while maintaining sense of humor, but not falling to goofiness, practice powerful exhalation exercises to strengthen diaphramic muscles, practice screaming with funny face then poker face then sad face, mad face then sober face then happy face. then close eyes and just try screaming from soft scream to loud scream, and back try to hold notes for 8-16 beats

SMA:  Notice in the two comments above by the earnest, sincere catgumart, the sincerity, thoughtfulness, time, and elaboration that he has applied to his misguided and fruitless activities. I'm sure in cases like these, as in all the faux primal therapy that I've witnessed where so much time and money has been wasted in a meaningless effort, that there is no way that this person will ever be able to see what a waste of time he has engaged in. Psychologists call it "cognitive dissonance." Basically it means that people cannot ackowledge that they have totally wasted their time -- even when in psych experiments they are put through routines that are totally nonsensical, then told afterwards that they were being fooled into thinking that it was beneficial. In these experiments, with full knowledge that it was all a farce, the subjects will come up with the most elaborate, concocted ideas or theories of how the experience benefited them and was worth their earnest involvement in it.
Similarly, there is no way that catgumart, sadly, could ever face the amount of his life's time that has been wasted in such silly fruitless actions. That is what makes Janov's mistake so sad and even tragic for so many; for there are thousands of people like catgumart. In Kurt Cobain's terms, they're all living in a jar and have been given breathing holes, and they "think they're happy" - but they're really just in the "laundry room."
The saddest part of all is that all of these people needed and wanted psychological help because they were/are suffering. And because Janov, influenced by good intentions but lack of foresight and no doubt by greed and ego, simply -- in a psych lab metaphor way -- released random food pellets to the pigeons, the pigeons engaged in all kinds of nonsensical, ritualistic behaviors, totally confused as to a way to cause another pellet to be released.  (Sorry, to anyone who hasn't had a freshman psych course.)

This is not primal therapy. This is the myth of what primal scream therapy is and has been used to debunk primal therapy. Google "Primal Therapy" for more info

SMA:  Finally, a year after its release, someone knows the truth and speaks out.
