Sponsor Project Icarus!Overview During the fall semester of 2003, three Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) students envisioned a goal - to build a rocket and launch it to 62.5 miles - space. No group of students had ever designed a such rocket from the ground up. The first vehicle, Icarus I, launched March 22, 2007. Although it did not reach space, its apogee of 37.8 miles was the highest altitude ever achieved, by the most complex student designed rocket ever built. With one successful launch behind them, the next generation of students is determined to build on the lessons learned and launch a truly space capable vehicle. Designated Icarus III, it will carry a scientific payload designed by students on a rocket designed by students. It is the most ambitious project yet. However, the current team stands on the shoulders of giants. The program was founded and is maintained by members of the Embry-Riddle Future Space Explorers and Developers Society, a chapter of the Students for the Exploration and Development of Space. These individuals are motivated not by grades or money, but by the call of the exploration of space. They pursue rocketry because it is the right thing to do, and work hard to build these Icarus vehicles as a warning shot of things to come. Current SponsorsThe Icarus project has been made possible with the help of these generous donors. ![]() ![]()
