Present Day Slavery

Slavery has existed since the dawn of man.  It was a form of trade, a relatively inexpensive form of labor or servitude, and one of the most shameful stains on the history of every civilization.  Most slaves lived long, hard, grueling lives filled with too much work.  The lucky ones who got to be servants and do housework instead of fieldwork had better lives, but were still slaves with no freedom or rights.  They were the property of their owners, to be used for whatever the master wanted to use them for.  The worst part is that it didn’t end in America with the 13th amendment; it didn’t end anywhere.  Slavery still exists illegally, and is more profitable than ever.

Almost 90% of victims to slavery are women and children.  They could be paying off debts, tricked into it, captured, or even, in this day and age, born into it.  A practice which should have never started, that was supposed to have ended about 150 years ago, continues today.  The scary thing is, it’s not just poor people in war-torn countries, you could be forced into slavery as well.  In fact, you might even see or know people who are suffering in some form of slavery.  The U.S.A. is one of the prime destinations of human traffickers and slaves.  Many desperate women are told they are going to be models, or maids, or factory workers in a wealthy country.  Upon arrival, their papers are taken away and they are forced to be salves in brothels.  Slavery is one of the fastest growing and most profitable trades today.  It is also one of the least recognized crimes in the world.  Many people live their entire lives as slaves, with no hope of being freed.  Once people start officially recognizing this problem and do something about it, we could finally be on our way to being slave free.
