African Americans Who Avoided Slavery

Although most Africans lived in Africa at the time, a few African Americans lived in America as free individuals.  These people obviously weren’t treated well, and typically would have would have been kept as slaves and were mostly Revolutionary War veterans.  Some were taken from their homes, in America, and sold as slaves.  Some African Americans were lucky enough to avoid this, for instance,a happy couple called the Princes.

Abijah and Lucy Prince were able to escape slavery by buying themselves out of it.  They bought land and became somewhat important figures in their communities.  Abijah was a Revolutionary War veteran, and Lucy was the first ever published African American poet.  They weren’t afraid to stand up to people intruding on their land, and they weren’t afraid of taking up challenges, like court cases.  They were a brave and influential couple to all African Americans.
