My Story

From Marine to Mommy....

I'm going to start out by telling the absolute truth.  Being pregnant was miserable for me.  I know for some people it is an amazing experience and I am envious because for me it was stressful from day one.  Please don't get me wrong, I absolutely love and adore my son and wouldn't change anything about him for the world, and if being miserable for 10 months made him possible then I would go through it again for him.

Let me back up and talk a little about who I was before I became a mommy.  I have always been a tomboy of sorts.  My dad would take me hunting and play catch with me (I think he really wanted a son!).  I played sports growing up and loved watching football on Sundays.  However, I also tried to keep in touch with my girlie side too.  I was in ballet and jazz for almost ten years and finally gave it up when my teacher told me to decided between sports and ballet, I should of chosen ballet and maybe I would still have long lean dancer legs.  But, it was no surprise to my family when I decided to join the Marine Corps right outta high school.  I served for five years and met my husband when I was in.  We are now married with our own budding little devil dog tearing up the house.

So, after twenty-some odd years of being active and in shape (I was never skinny, but I was in shape) pregnancy really affected me more than just physically.  It was rough watching my husband and teenage stepson run around and play football while I was puking for the fifth time before noon.

Then Karma kicked me directly in the face.  I always said that when I got pregnant I wasn't going to get huge and make the mistake of trying to eat for two.  I was going to walk and workout and do prenatal yoga and blah blah blah.  I did none of the above.  I was so miserably sick for the first four months I couldn't move more than five feet from a toilet, and then when the doctor gave me medicine to help keep food down I lost my ankles almost immediatly.  I went from looking skinnier than I was before I got pregnant to looking 6 months pregnant all in one week.  I looked like someone had filled my skin to maximum capacity with water.  I was miserable, I could barely walk, let alone exercise.  And the eating thing, forget about it.  I knew I wasn't eating for two, but I was always starving and if I didn't eat I felt sick.  Never again will I make blanket statements about how I will do something that I know nothing about, thank you karma for teaching me a lesson.

Now, I am trying to dig out of the hole that lesson dug.

Why I did this site

I felt so overwhelmed once I looked in the mirror after my baby was born and realized how big I had actually gotten that I knew I would have to make a very serious commitment to losing weight.  So, I started researching and researching and talking to people and researching and remembering my Marine Corps days.  Throughout this research and investigation I found lots of helpful information and lots of crap.  I thought it would be nice to go to one place specifically for new moms.  Then I decided I could provide this information so other moms had one place to go to to find reliable, free information on diet and weight loss after pregnancy.  Because, I quickly found out that my body had changed in so many ways that my normal exercise mindset was not going to work this time, especially since I also now have a new baby to take care of instead of just myself.

Some of you may be wondering what qualifies me to talk about becoming healthy after a baby.  My first qualification is that I am a mommy and have experienced the woes of pregnancy and what it does to emotions and physical appearance.  Also, I feel that anybody who can make it through Marine Corps bootcamp can give a little advice on exercising and health.  But, don't rely soley on my experience.  Get out there on the wonderful world wide web and see what works for you.
