Welcome to Obsidian

Across the Impossible Sea lies a new continent that was named the Land of Black Glass by the merchant fleet that first discovered it. This new world is laden with ancient ruins of a long dead cilvilisation, is rich in minerals and ores, with dungeons, temples and catacombs full of treasure and artefacts waiting to be discovered.

Port Obsidian lies on the coast of the new land, the only permanent settlement established in the new world. A port town ruled by a collection of merchants and their private army, the town is open to all newcomers and welcomes every race, nationality and profession into its tight embrace.

Obsidian has become the common name for both the land and port now, so-called due to the large amount of obsidian found; many ruins are built from it, or incorporate it, and there is a vast field of the volcanic glass along the edge of the mountains that none have so far managed to traverse.

The Land of Black Glass lies largely unexplored. A few locations have been looted or investigated, all in the name of making a profit. The merchants dig up the Bitter Leaf Forest to harvest the leaves they grind to make nepenthe; looters rob the ruins for the treasure left there; fishermen haul in fish from Serpent Lake, and explorers search the Badlands, Barrier Peaks and even the Fields of Black Glass for answers.

But most the new world is virgin land waiting to be discovered, named, and plundered.

Tidebreakers

A series of small islands that act as breakers for the worst of the waves, making the cove that Obsidian lies in a safe harbour. The Western island holds a ruined temple looted when the merchant fleet first discovered the new world.

Obsidian

The port of Obsidian, a stretch of settled land measuring roughly 57 acres and home to approximately 3,500 colonists.

Bitter Leaf Forest

The largest forest, source of the bitter leaf spices that have become one of the major exports of the new world. The leaf is ground up, then added to a drink to create a natural opiate that is being called nepenthe (means 'sleep').

Serpent Lake

A deep lake great for fishing, but also home to some deadly lake serpents, giant water-snakes.

Badlands

A waste of barren plains with rugged hillocks, caves, and a scattering of ruins more ancient than those found on the grassy plains that make up most of the new world.

Fields of Black Glass

Surrounding a smoking volcano, this plain of obsidian is part of the reason the new world is known as the Land of Black Glass. At the base of the nameless volcano lies a ruined city, petrified from an eruption of ash and lava many decades past.

The Barrier Peaks

A range of towering peaks create a natural barrier that separates the Land of Black Glass from whatever lies beyond. A lake, grassy plains and a small forest have been sighted by those braving the mountains, but as yet none have found a pass through them. Several expeditions sent to cross the mountains failed to return.

Forgotten Isles

Three islands, one tiny, the others a mix of mountains, forest or marsh, lie to the far North East. Ruins lie on all three, better preserved than most. The sea around them is often turbulent, making a sea crossing difficult and the few explorers that have so far visited the Isles have done so by magical means.
