Ponteland Methodist Church

FROM THE ARCHIVES

Methodism first came to Ponteland during the early part of the 19th Century. We are not sure of the exact date but suffice it to say we have been here for a very long time.

One of the stalwarts of Methodism in Ponteland was James Stobert, a miller and farmer. In 1898, he was presented with the portrait photograph shown below by the Methodist Circuit Local Preachers in recognition of his work.

We believe that the first Church was built around 1841. The picture below was taken in 1903 when the Church was under threat from the river. It just shows, we don't have all the bad weather in the 21st century!

Work on building a new Chapel was started in 1907 and building began on the site of the existing Church. The picture below was taken around 1930.

The picture below was taken in the early 1950's. Can you spot the differences?

The Church was extended in 1956. Mr H.B. Stobert, grandson of James Stobert, lays the first foundation stone.

Mr Tom Straughan lays the second foundation stone. Another wet day!
