Ponca Carnegie Library was proud to welcome children’s book author, Julia Cook, on Thursday, January 28th. Mrs. Cook, a resident of Fremont, NE is a former teacher and counselor turned nationally known author. Her books are written to educate kids on subjects such as kidnapping, tattling, personal safety, and even nose-picking! Don’t let the word “educational” fool you, her books are written to engage kids and make reading (and learning) fun.
Mrs. Cook made stops at Ponca and Jackson Elementary schools before her appearance at the library. Although the presentation at the library was geared toward parents of young children, some kids were so enamored by Mrs. Cook earlier that day at school that they came back for more that evening at the library. The author read from several of her books. Some favorites included Don’t Be Afraid to Drop, My Mouth is a Volcano, and of course, I Am a Booger… Treat Me with Respect! Mrs. Cook’s two dogs, Jake and Angus, were there to assist her during her presentations at the school and the library. Jake, 4-lb Chihuahua, and Angus, a 2-lb teacup dachshund, were very popular with children and adults alike. Mrs. Cook has given over 400 school presentations in the past 4 years. Her appearance at the library was made possible by the Youth Grant for Excellence from the Nebraska Library Commission. You can learn more about Julia and her books at her website: www.juliacookonline.com. Books by Julia Cook will soon be available to check out at the Ponca Carnegie Library.
