structures. It is one of the important characteristics of human cultures. Architecture
is influenced by many fields including: art, philosophy, technology, science, politics
and environment. Since we live in a materialistic world, materials selection is
an important issue in architecture; which will influence the final appearance of
the structure. The fact that ancient structures, such as the pyramids, survived
over time is related to the fact that they were made of stone, which is durable
material with high abrasion resistance. Ancient structures that survived over
the years serve as memorial monuments of ancient cultures that no longer exist. Even today, buildings surround us creates our living environment and influences
our cultural life. Since architectural design includes the considerations of
space, composition and time, we may compare between
the architect
and a theater director. Although architecture is an artistic profession, it is well
connected to reality, since the architect should take in account considerations
such as environment, client requirements, available materials and economic considerations. Kinetic Architecture Did you know? - Concrete - is a handmade composite material widely used for architectural
structures. It was widely used within the Roman
Empire, but modern concrete was invented only in the mid-18th
century. Concrete is composed of cement, aggregate and water. The aggregate is made
of coarse gravel or crushed rocks mixed with sand, whereas the cement (usually Portland
cement) serves as a binder for the aggregate. When water is added to the dry
composite mixture, it solidified and hardened, through a hydration process,
creating a stone-like material. Concrete is a brittle material, having relatively
high compressive strength, but low tensile strength. In order to increase its tensile
strength the concrete is often reinforced with steel. הרצוג ודה מרון Herzog & de Meuron at Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herzog_&_de_Meuron Dominus Winery http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/Dominus_Winery.html DeZeen - Herzog & de Meuron ![]() Photo: Rafi Ashkenazi, 2009 Dubai and Moscow's Moving Skyscrapers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4muhc_QUGcI
