Having gotten far enough along that we can actually print something, we need to learn how to ink the type effectively. Our first trials had too much ink and the results were a little "blobby." I should add that most of the difficulty arises when printing text. For linocuts and wood blocks, it seems difficult to have too much ink.
At this point, I'm pretending that we've got an iron handpress and have started reading the books by Allen and Rummonds closely. In both books, I see pretty extensive discussions of inking. Both are very concerned with control and reproducibility for the two steps: getting the ink onto the roller and getting the ink onto the form.
Part of the solution is to use roller bearers. Care is still required to get a consistent amount of ink on the roller. Again, Allen and Rummonds offer detailed descriptions of their approaches. I'll try them both.
