Repairs to the Walterville Canal Rock Drop Diversion Structures

About the Topic

The Walterville Canal was constructed in 1911 as a run-of-the-river hydroelectric canal to provide power to the City of Eugene. As part of relicensing, EWEB was permitted to construct the first of three rock drop structures (chevrons) in the north channel of the McKenzie in 2003; this allowed them to divert their full water right of 2,500 cubic feet per second into the Walterville Canal. In 2007 three additional rock drop structures were constructed including a below grade rock sill and a barb. The intent of the additional structures is to bring stability to the reach and prevent further headcount migration.

After unusually high flows over the winter of 2008-09, it was found that significant damage had occurred at the structures and major repairs would be necessary. Over the course of a week approximately 550 yards of large rock material was mobilized and nine of the fourteen structures were repaired. Because of the nature of the design and material used in the construction of the chevrons they continue to be a challenge to maintain. EWEB has since completed repairs in 2011 and is working with a consultant for a permanent solution to bring greater stability to the reach.
