Attention All Green Drivers!
Puckett's Mill Elementary School is a "No Idle" zone. If you are waiting in the "car rider" lane please turn off your car.
On Wednesday, August 19, Puckett’s Mill will get a special visit from The Clean Air Campaign® and The UPS Foundation during afternoon student pick up. Last year our school signed on as a Clean Air School and created a No Idling Zone in the carpool line to clean the air and protect our students’ growing lungs. Everyone did an excellent job of turning their engines off last year, and we’re grateful that you have been so supportive of our efforts. To jump start another successful year of idling reduction, The Clean Air Campaign and The UPS Foundation are going to hold a kick-off event to remind us of the importance of healthy air. If you see some friendly faces handing out water bottles and flyers while you wait for your children, please welcome them and feel free to tell them why you support the program. They may even ask a few lucky volunteers to participate in a fun video they’ll be filming that afternoon. Thank you for setting a great example of environmental stewardship with our students and making the air safe for them to breathe! Myth: Turning off and restarting your vehicle is hard on the engine and uses more gas than if you leave it running.
Reality: Frequent restarting has little impact on engine components like the battery and the starter motor. Component wear caused by restarting the engine is estimated to add $10 per year to the cost of driving, money that will likely be recovered several times over in fuel savings from reduced idling. The bottom line: more than 10 seconds of idling uses more fuel than restarting the engine.
