History:

DID YOU KNOW:

  • Supposedly, Pitchin used to be called Concord.
  • Everett's Atlas, 1875, states that a David Bennett started a grocery and after opening a keg of beer, told all to "pitch in".
There's another similiar story of how a man who ran a sawmill and when others applied for work, he would tell them to "pitch in".

The first building in Pitchin was owned by Green Porter in 1845. He built a residence and a blacksmith shop. The Methodist Protestant Church was built in 1846 as well as other houses and shops.

George Hansbraugh built and operated a steam sawmill in 1854. It ran for 12 years with John G. Hatfield and Aaron Dean as later owners.

The 1880 census shows the population of Pitchin and the surrounding farms as 120. This productive little town included the grocery store owned by John H. Todd, James M. Littler's blacksmith shop, Job Evan's wagon shop, James M.T. Gregg's shoe shop, Dr. Dillehunt's office, the church, a schoolhouse and 20 residences.

The first permanent settlements surrounding Pitchin were near North River Road and Pitchin Road (Section 6) Abraham Inlow 1804, Ebenezer Wheeler (section 12) 1806, James B. Stewart (section 6) 1808 as well as John H. Garlough (section 18). Mr Garlough was killed by a vicious bull while building a grist mill and was the first to be buried in the Garlough Cemetary. **                Pitchin and the Surrounding Landowners

Festivals:

Apple Butter Festival - Pitchin, Ohio: Homemade Apple Butter, Apple Dumplings and Pies. Usually held in October, this annual event is a fundraiser for the Pitchin United Methodist Church.

Landmarks:

The General Store - Pitchin, Ohio   Located on the corner of Selma Rd and S. Pitchin Rd, the general store was the place to hang out. Baby Boomers will remember the nostalgia of the store. Farmers and locals would sit around the ole pot belly stove and swap stories and the latest news.

Pitchin residents would stop by to get gas from the pump while inside, youngsters deliberated over "penny candy" behind the glass case. Old farm tools, deer antlers, various taxidermied animals, old bottles and the like decorated the store and on the benches out front, sat satified customers enjoying a pepsi and watching the occasional car or tractor drive by.

The Pitchin Fire Department - Pitchin, Ohio  5467 Selma Rd, just down from the General Store. The Fire Dept Building was designed and built by contractor Don Jensvold. Orville Nave and Alfred "Ack" Cultice added their valuable skills as well as other volunteers. The building is home to the Pitchin Volunteer Fire Department. The siren sounded everyday at noon; a signal for the farmers in the field to break for lunch. It could be heard for miles and when it sounded, the volunteers quickly made their way to the fire-trucks to battle the local fires. The siren also sounded at Tornado Warnings giving the local residents time to take cover.

The building has served as a meeting place for various groups and activities from Boy Scout Meetings to Garden Clubs to dinners and fundraisers.
