Current research
I'm currently working on my second book, titled Consuming Race. This book explores how the ideas we have about race are produced and reproduced in everyday acts of consumption: it is through the products we buy, the games we play, the TV we watch, the restaurants we eat at and the holidays we take that we make sense of ourselves and others. Consuming Race will be published by Routledge.
Selected recent writing ‘Obama and the politics of blackness: anti-racism in the “post-black” conjuncture’, is the lead article (free to access) in an edition of Souls journal on 'post-racial politics and its discontents', with responses from Bill Fletcher Jr., Gerald Horne, Paula Ioanide, James Jennings, Rickey Hill and Mark Sawyer, together with a brief reply from me.'Radical subjects after hegemony', published in Subjectivity, considers the theoretical blind-spot whereby the proponents of 'radical' political projects cannot account for the ways in which these projects have moved from the margins to the mainstream of contemporary culture.  From the local to the national to the transnational, The Politics of Multiculturalism sets out a framework for thinking about race in the current historical moment, where racism is simultaneously rejected and reproduced.
