Book Phantom Tollbooth in 3-D

The 6th Grade Language Arts class just finished reading the book Phantom Tollbooth.  Students then created 3-D representations of a scene from the book.  The pictures are below.  What an amazingly creative group!

Ancient Greece Comes to Pioneer!
The 6th Grade Humanities class had a visit today by visitors from AncientGreece.  These distinguished guests were dressed in traditional chitons, or togas.  As part of our unit on Ancient Greece we will study the culture, myths, society, and famous people who inhabited that great land.  We will wrap up our unit by holding a Greek Food Festival on February 10th.  Students will research ancient Greek recipes, make them at home, and share with the class.  Students will also make their culminating presentations for the unit.  Parents are highly encouraged to attend!

Chickens Go To the Afterlife!

The 6th grade Humanities students finished the chicken mummification project today.  After doing their final observations of the chickens, students
brought them to other classes to explain the mummification process.  We then had our funerary procession through the building on our way to the "Dumpster of the Afterlife".  We are now moving to Ancient Greece.  I love this unit for a lot of reasons, including our "Ancient Greek Food Festival"!

Podcasting 6th Grade

Both of the 6th Grade classes have finished their podcasts.  The first five podcasts were done by the Humanities class.  These are "dreamtime" stories written by the students and done as part of our unit on Australia and the Aboriginal peoples there.  The next six podcasts are about "intentional communities".  These were done as part of our unit on the book The Giver.  The students researched communities that have organized around a central mission or belief (sometimes referred to as utopian ideals).
