What to expect in your first visit?

At the first visit, the patient is requested to arrive 10-15 minutes early to fill in a simple registration form. The patient is then taken to the consultation room for a detailed consultation about the history of his/her condition and general health.

Your initial appointment will involve a detailed assessment of your ailment in order to make a clinical diagnosis and select the correct treatment. It is important that you come with comfortable clothing because most of the time the area to be treated need to be exposed. The physiotherapist provides the following suggestions:

  • Any area treated needs to be exposed. Swimming trunks or shorts are suggested to help expose your back and lower limbs. (i.e. bikini to expose the whole back or shorts if the area to be treated are the knees)
  • Come in sports clothing, so that you feel more comfortable during exercises
  • Bring your most used pair of shoes, because they are going to be analyzed. The shoe's sole tell your gait pattern.
  • Bring any medical notes or documentation you possess regarding your problem and name/dose of any medication you are taking.

Appointments

Your first appointment will last 60 minutes, including a full assessment, treatment and home-based exercise prescription. The follow-ups can be programmed in full sessions (1 to 1 ½ hour) or half session (30-45 minutes), the duration is set depending on the patient’s progress or presentation of symptoms, which in turn will determine the pace of treatment as weekly, every 10 days or fortnight between sessions.

If English is not your first language, the physiotherapist also offers consultation in Spanish and Portuguese.
