Global Postural Re-education (RPG®)

The Chartered Physiotherapist Laylane Chagas is pioneering the French method Global Postural Re-education - RPG® (Reeducation Posturale Globale) in the UK, providing a complete option to manage posture deviations, treating aches and pains caused by progressive muscular stiffness and joint degeneration.

The principal aim of the Global Postural Re-education (RPG®) is to restore a correct alignment of posture and re-establish a correct biodynamic of the body movement, in order to prevent or treat musculoskeletal problems.

What does RPG® treat?

RPG®’s treats almost all conditions which have one of these symptoms: pain, weakness, stiffness, or loss of movement. The RPG® is useful to treat either body imbalance and/or aches and pains which affect us daily, in

a way it returns to the tissues the elasticity necessary for a good body functioning. The main goal is to improve morphological deviations in order to regain progressive re-education of normal body functioning.

  • Postural education in children, adolescents and adults, postural hygiene ( ergonomics
  • Spinal curvature deviation: forward head, scoliosis, increased/flat lordosis/kyphosis
  • Upper and lower extremity deformities: rolled shoulders, winged scapulae, flat foot, pes cavus, knees varus/valgus
  • Spinal pain syndromes: neck/upper/middle or low back pain (acute or chronic), torticollis,  sacroiliac dysfunction, disc disorders
  • Articular or tendon dysfunctions: arthritis, rheumatism, ankylosing spondylitis, tendinitis, subacromial impingement, rotator cuff inflammation, frozen shoulder, epicondylitis (tennis/golfer elbow), metatarsalgia, calcaneus spur, plantar fasciitis
  • Neurological disorders of a mechanical origin: dizziness or vertigos, cervicobrachial neuralgias, migraines, sciatica, pins and needles in arm and legs (nerve entrapment)
  • Respiratory dysfunctions: short of breathiness, chest deformations
  • Post-traumatic compensations: fracture, strain, sprain, joint dislocation, post-surgical recovery, urinary incontinence
RPG® can be applied to patients of any age, respecting each person’s capability. This therapy is based on a thorough analysis and observation of anatomy, physiology, and the way in which the person makes ill (evolution of symptoms). It observes the individuality of each person in order to design the treatment, starting from the presentation of symptoms, and searching its causes.

How is a RPG® treatment?

A RPG® session comprises of a series of global stretching positions, which evolves gradually from an initial position with minimum tension, to a final position with progressive stretching. These progressive stretching positions are called postures and are selected in accordance with a specific assessment tool and parameters of pain, load capacity, age, and which muscle chains are involved

Normally, it is selected a minimum of two postures per session performed with the patient lying, sitting on the couch, or in standing positions. The therapist's decision on treatment’s pace and intensity is based entirely on the patient’s feedback in order to gain effective pain control.

The treatment is individual, during approximately 1 hour, usually weekly (twice a week for acute problems), programmed according to each patient needs and the outcomes achieved.

The only tools used for the RPG® treatment are the therapist’s hands. The physiotherapist gently stretches the muscles to reduce tensions, looks after the joints, while the patient’s body is being aligned. The patient contributes actively in the performance of each posture, working on smooth muscle contractions and keeping the corrections at all times. The patient’s active participation facilitates the re-education and a gain progressive body awareness. At no time abrupt or unexpected moves are used.

Firstly, an assessment is performed to analyze if your ailments are passive to receive postural treatment. The treatment plan is discussed afterwards to set your goals and program the average length of treatment. Frequently, positive outcomes are observed from the very beginning of the treatment. The main outcomes expected in RPG® are long-term pain and symptoms relief, and correction of postural compensations or deviations.
